Van progress
been looking for a rear axle - very difficult to find something in the right ratio and more importantly the right width Volvo 760 was close but just too narrow to make up with spacers
I'm looking at ford 9 3/4" 3.7 LSD from an F150 pickup very expensive but at 66½" its only 1" wider than what i have now
ive packed the wheel out to see what arch clearance i have and its not much about 50mm suspention travel if i roll the arch lip
they also stick outside the arch but the tread is under so it's legal and i must admit i quite like the look of it with the wheels right out (after all the hassle i went to before to get them under )

here's a pic to show how they sit close but is it too close



just got to decide if i should risk it and part with a large amount of cash now

just me being thick it was the 960 i meant the massive tank thing

wont be far off a mk3 axle - they are about 1" bigger than a mk1/2

not yet mate - ive got the van parked on the street and i need it to look complete for as long as possable as soon as i swap the axle i'll pull the diff and post up the pics i'm interested to see it myself

Probably just a broken tooth on the pinion

Well i got the F-150 axle it's a Dana60 and it's HUGE if anything too big i dont think i'll have much clearance between the diff case and the floor but on the plus side the diff case dont look like it'll come off 2nd best to any speed ramp
I'd done a bit of reaserch and the axle gets good reviews in the states - ok for up to 600bhp so it'll do me for a while my only concerns now is that it's gonna slow the van down with it being so big i went over to manchester this morning i was stood there looking at it thinking shall i buy it or not and just thought sod it take a risk i pulled the diff cover off and it looked mint inside the oil was good and the LSD works

here's a pic of it next to a mk6 transit axle - just shows how big it is



i'm not sure if i should use the standard brakes - my wheels do fit inside but it might be easier to fit the disks and calipers ive got on my axle allready

oh yes twin turbos here we come well mabe next year

one other thing i've thought of is the offset is likely to be different to the transit one - ive got my engine gearbox and prop all in line off centre down the van - i'll probly have to re-position them all to get them in line now one little job always leads to another

Shouldn't break that axle Luke.
All the work will be worth while when your go through the 1/4 under 15 secs .

not much progress - i've got the axle stripped, well half shafts out i'm gonna get them machined up hopefully next week, while they are being done i'll make up the mounts for the shocks, leafsprings and anti tramp bars, weld them on and give it all a nice coat of black hammerite at the moment favoring having a go at fitting my existing disks and calipers - looks like they will go on ok

once it's all on i might have a go at fitting the anti roll bar that it had
