Life is never boring for a MK5 owner

Lola had some jobs to do this week, but she decided that being a good girl is not an option and she deserves some more time off... Do you remember how her first engine died last year? Here is a little reminder:

The alternator mounting bolt had snapped, went all the way thru the mounting hole and the nut with the washer drilled a hole into the oil filter as the alternator was shaking. Here is the "killer" bolt from last year:

You can see that the head is missing and the bolt itself went thru some abuse before it was finally fed up.

Well guess what...?
Driving along Greenford, back to work after deliveries, my battery light comes on

Then the steering starts to feel hard and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa NO BRAKES servo

Glad I had my thick pants on

Looking under the bonnet, both belts are gone to the belt heaven...

Well since I didn't have any tights on and no spanners in the boot, I decided to finish the short journey to work, my eyes stuck on water temperature, both feet on the brake pedal and finger stuck up my... well I'm sure you can picture the hell I went thru...
But - luckily we survived, no road kills, nor pernament damage to the pants, went to buy new belts and hurrrayyy out comes my spanners again.

I won't go into details, but some swearing was involved again, since the new alternator belt just could not-would not get on

I ended up taking off the whole front of the van, trying to find a reason and also trying to figure out why the belt has snapped so soon

And here is what I found... mounting bolt number TWO

yeah

This one snapped too. On the other end

silly little things

Taking the sleeve in the alternator with it

Here is what it should look like:

And here is what mine looks like now

I don't know why it happens, but having it twice in such a short time (on two different engines - bear in mind), I can't understand it... Received some great advice from gurus of the forum (thank you very much

) and then I put MinorMatts solution into place:

I don't know what is that thing called... Luckily there is very understanding salesman in the hire shop round the corner (I think he can read minds

)... I said I need "the steel stick thing with threads about 13cm long, 8mm thick" , he just looked at me and knew immediately what I was after...

He gave me four matching nuts too to lock the alternator in place

I cut "the steel thing" to size, made sure everything fits and voa laaaa, borrowed alternator is on and it doesn't move at all

Have to sort out the sleeve for my alternator now, and then swap them again

Now I'm going to have a fight with the PAS belt, it just seems short too

Will update you again soon
