i have, with mt75 boxes, and i am assuming this is what you had

before you consigne it all to the scrap heap, get underneath and take a carefull look around the bellhousing and mountings and see if you can identify where it failed .... my bet is the lower 4 and 8 o'clock positions .....

now take a look at the engine mounts you have, and i'd bet they dont have the outriggers that branch back to the gearbox do they ? ... bet your next set of mounts will have!

they should look like this

EDIT! .... forgot to say get over to ebay now as there is about 4 or 5 mt75 boxes on there at the moment so you should be able to get one fairly cheap :)

looked under it mate as had 2 take prop off b4 it could be moved as was all jumping about.

carnt see why box failed? its split in half across ways & has also split bellhouseing in half near starter moter.

needs :
mt75 box
clutch
flywheel (ring gear fooked)
starter (maybe)

gave it 2 a local garage who supplying & fitting all above for £240!!!! not worth doin it myself 4 that price

it would not be the first time that the link between aluminum gearbox and cast block has given up the ghost ... bear in mind the torque involved, and the mounting positions, you have the rear gearbox support (right at the back) the engine mounts, that are further forward than the balancing point of the engine alone, combine this with the gearbox front end weight, and you have a bit of a weak point, hence the engine mounts that branch back to the g/box lower mounting area.

I could be wrong, but i beleive this is the reason for the redesigned mountings, to save this type of failure on high torque applications

EDIT .... forgot to say, all above said and done, there is probably plenty of mt75 boxes out there running fine without these extra support mountings and probably will be for many years to come

sorry for the 2 replies, only saw the last one in the window when i came into the thread at first.

the damage to the box (ie splitting in half) is making you wonder if something broke, jammed up and then caused the box to grenade itself, right? well very hard to determine if something inside caused the destruction, Especially as you were doing 80 at the time, if the box cracked around the bell housing and then seperated at an angle, it would probably cause enough of a problem to effectively seize up, reversing the normal power transfer from the engine to the back wheels, to the wheels and forward motion (plus the vehicle weight) trying to drive the engine through the gearbox, if it seized up in the clutch area (or g/box side of clutch) i could well beleive the forces involved caused the internals of the box to be forced apart, fracturing an already damaged casing past the point of its strength

a smaller problem would have been nice though.

when you get the pics of whats left of the g/box, post them up, i'd love to see them. what did recovery guy that saw it say ?

i know your going to be curious after a little while to what might have caused it, so if you do find some info i too would be interested :)

cheers, and good luck, hope it didn't cause any other damage and your up and running again soon
