if they are the same with or without oil the bottom end will be ok - it'll be top end thats causing it :D leave the bottom end/rings alone no point wasting time/money on it imo :D

it might be the hydraulic lifters causing the problem  not allowing the valves to shut fully  not sure tho see what others say on that :D

its a bit "tappety" till it warms up, does this help with the diagnosis?

Make sure you have the right oil in it for starters :!:

Those values are quite typical of a 100k+ DOHC motor, if its now running well enough then change the oil n filter and leave it alone :D

Thanks Luke and Rover :D an oil and filter change it is - I am running 5-40 Semi Synth at the moment

Luke Do you still have that engine? it would be good to get one and practice on, ready for when i chuck some spanners about on the charity build... am great with scooters as i said, but a little more transit experience would not go amiss 8) Would that engine from the Mk6 fit straignt in mine? just wondering when and if they changed the mounts about etc and it never harms to have a spare 8)

Well I am now developing a love/hate relationship with my van,

I hate it when it breaks down.... motor factors love taking my money when i fix it

In the last 2 weeks, it started playing up again, same sypmtoms as before, NO POWER and NO SPEED so i thought ah yes the MAF sensor again, time to change it.

Changed it still no joy. this lead to me taking it to a alba tyres in leeds to get the codes read. they came back with the MAF sensor and Lambda sensor bank 1. Ordered the parts and the fitted it there and then. NO IMPROVEMENT.... mechanic said it sounds like your middle box is blowing, it knew it was (it started blowing between wolvo and leeds) so agreed to have them fit a replacement..... when they took the old one off they found a piece of the CAT honeycomb inside it reducing the gas flow dramatically.. So i asked them to smash the honey comb out of the rest of the cat. This done, NO IMPROVEMENT EITHER.

Started to scratch my head at this one and so did they, i remembered Rovers suggestion about maybe a coil pack fault. ordered one from a factors in Leeds and fitted it.... it made an improvement, ordered a set of leads and they were 90 degree angle ones and i needed straight ones.... spent 15 minutes in the shop modifying the plactic casings to straight from angle - used a hacksaw  They dont call me Gravelrash Bodgeneering for nothing

fitted the newly modded leads and yippee got the power back to where it nearly should be..........

Started driving home to wolvo after my training course and the bugger would get to 70 and no more, then it started to pull back and gain again... pull back and gain again....

Had the plugs out and they are black around the edges and skightly white in core, bare in mind these plugs have only done 600 miles so far. Checked the fuel pressure by removing the little blue cap and depressing the release valve.... lots of fuel coming out when the vehicle is running, but no pressure at all when the engine and electics turned off

any advice on what the pulling back and going again is and is this normal for the fuel system to behave this way? its been so long since i worked on valved/efi systems i am at a loss

Cheers for any help that comes across

done all the usual tests, timing marks etc.

Oh i have now become the proud owner of some twin headlights for my van and will be color coding them to match :)

bumper still under construction so will unveil that when its finished and painted. will be taking orders for the bumper when its done and if people show enough interest :)

engine back together with new rings and head pressure tested.
i am noiw getting an almost identical reading across all cylinders of 180, so it looks all good so far. still having "fun" trying to get it to tick over without feathering the throttle...... will feedback any info i find.

oh i had a U1262 code on my reader yesterday. strange thing was it didnt show any other faults other than it couldnt communicate with something... as to what the something is, i have yet to get any clear idea ??

More info as it happens

Found out what the error code is all about.

it seems that there is a problem with the device communicating across its internal network of busses and isnt sure what the heck is at fault.

further information reveals that if it doesnt have an associated error code showing too, then it can be ignored.... its been described as a ECU "burp"

Well - its been ages since i posted on here, what with work and one thing and another, other peoples scooters to repair etc.

i finally rebuilt the engine and sorted most of my issues with a new set of rings and would you believe it a new petrol pump.

work i have done since the last post is to fit a new gas system and getting a repectable return to the ltr of gas now as well. the van pulls like a train in all gears and happily sits at 70+ on the motorway with plenty in reserve.

all was going well with the van and it passed its mot with nothing more than an advisory on one tyre and a dead bulb...... then last week some plank pulled out in front of me and cabbaged the side of my van, the insurance company have written it off as a cat c and i have boutht it back for scrap value. she is currently in the body shop having the front end straigntened :)

watch this space for a new colour and some interesting graphics....
