Ok...latest problem. Whilst hunting around for oil leaks i decided to investigate possible issues with odd starting. As part i found the retaining bolt for the solenoid was loose. So??? Tighten bolt...at which point bolt sheered off. Worried that puk would not start, i gave it a go, got the same old almost start and then vroom, but bad new rattle. When i tried again later there was nothing. Now the questions....

Do i have the right terminology...i refer to what looks like a small starter motor on top of the big one
Does the solenoid work something mechanical??? In which case if the inner body moves, its a major issue, if not, then minor and fixed in place with cable ties
Is this issue so complicated that the only solution is a new starter motor?
Does robbie mate still have a starter for sale if thats the case?

:) troublesome and then some!

Hi mate, your 'laymans terms' may leave a bit to the imagination, but I assume that you need another starter.

I am off to the south coast meet today, I'll stick one in the van, perhaps there is someone going to the meet that can get it back to you.

Feel free to call me if you think this might help.

PS. If this does happen, do check the teeth are the same as the one you take off, we know your van is a bit of a 'hybrid'

Aw BE, Tim had tried so hard to be polite :)

Maybe the previous was just trying to use the best parts and in the great words of Mel Brooks, picked Mr A B Normals brain!

Thanks Tim, please let me know how you get on. My phone has moved onto a white screen of death and i can only take incoming until i get back to work tom...

The thingy on top of the starter is the solenoid, it should not move, what bolt did u break and does the van still start?

Ah right :) the are two bolts that are formed from the solenoid and fit through a mounting in the starter. Bad news...one of the bolts (the bottom one) was loose and when i tightened it a bit it sheared from the solenoid...better news, when i went out to have a look again about an hour ago, i noticed the top bolt had no nut on so i used the bottom nut on the top bolt and she starts (after a fashion)...

So yes, with a bit of understanding troublesome does get going. Just waiting on an update from the Dieselhead :) :)

I would assume the bottom bolt sheared as it was the only thing holding the solenoid on which also explains why puk has been a bit reluctant to start recently

Right, chief engineer rescued sump plug problem and new sump seals in. All good and taken for a test drive tonight...but!

There is still a build up of oil in the rubber under the gearbox bellhousing! Aaaaagh! This is getting daft now! My blundering attempts at sealing leaks are not working well! It seems to me that oil in the bell housing would either come from the front or the back. Now my questions are these...

Could this be gearbox oil? Could this leak into the bellhousing? Is there a gasket there that could have given way???

The major gaskets have been done but if there was alot of oil leaking previously, would this heat up and still drop through to the floor? Making this remnants of previous leaks?

Any thoughts as always greatly appreciated. It has been a mare cleaning down and trying to check everything. I have a horrible feeling it can only be the type 9 box now, which would be really sad :(

Ooh, Internet search says there is a locating bolt that goes right through from the bellhousing that needs a seal...wonder if thats it :)
