i agree no way am i parking my 2 week conversion in the same feild still al least ive been enjoying little blue 4 2 yrs now that puts me inline of what in dachres build time? bloody nice his though wonder if i park next 2 him hell take the wrong 1 home

cheers guys... but I guess your right, there's always something to modify or build on a self-built campervan. I guess its a continuous project. Still have to get the foam seating done properly as I'm just using red settee seat cushions at the mo, they fit really good but I'd like some grey cloth ones made properly and I'd like to get a nice floor carpet made to fit as well.


But I've been out buying square plastic dishes, cups and other cutlery bits and bobs that wont rattle around... could do with a square fold up kettle too... .....

I've used the camper on day trips only as I haven't bought the foam for the bench seat-bed or the covers yet.
I'm just using some old red seat cushions from an old sofa at the moment. Whilst they're ok to sit on, a good comfortable seat/bed is a must...

I'd like to make a nice, comfortable, classy interior which doesn't make the stainless kitchen unit and other bits and bobs which I've built into the back of the van look awkward. so, I'm starting with the back bench seat first then I'll move to the upholstery of the front cab seats later on. If its all done in the same theme it should look ok.

Upholstery is something new to me, my only experience of kitting out the interior of vehicles is race/rally cars... and there isn't a whole lot of plush furnishings going on with them. So Its back to school with me and its time to pick up another profession........ Vehicle plush-fitter outer......... .......


This is how it looks at the moment. Red seats, grey carpeted walls, grey plastic window surrounds, second hand beige floor carpet.......nice...... ...... Although when I take the van out I chuck a load of cushions and covers, ect, in there to make it a bit comfy.








So, the first thing I did was to look at the other Transit campervans on the Forum and also to search through some old camper van magazines to get some inspiration for the inside. I cut a few pictures out that I liked and stuck them together to get some ideas that I can work on.











Then figured out what are the exact sizes of foam I need to make this work. This is the perimeter size of the bench seat-bed when folded out. Its a decent size bench seat-bed I reckon.... Although my feet will be hanging off the end of the bed but thats ok... ....








This is the sort of design that I came up with. It has a foam back section and a base section with its perimeter covered in a grey/silver weave material and in the centre of the seats it has a black/grey tartan material.

I think the grey/silver material goes a long way to matching the stainless and grey parts of the van and the black/grey tartan material adds a bit of detail to the seats. I had tried to get a Welsh tartan but I couldn't find any that I thought matches the van so I chose a nice plain, Scottish one.








These sketches are a few of the detailed drawings that helped me get my views across of the bench seat-bed and accessories to the upholsters that will be taking on the job of sowing it all together........(I really was actually thinking of buying an old upholsters sowing machine learning to sow, but chickened out...).... ....










'The foam shop' down in Taunton said they liked my ideas and would gladly make me something that looked like my drawings as well as supplying all the foam for the seats and accessories.

They seem a really knowledgeable and friendly business and have learnt lots talking to them and others on this upholstery project for the campervan. There's so much to know in order to go some way in creating good upholstery buts its been good fun so far.



The bench seat-bed will be ready in anything up to 21 days for pick-up and I'm using the time to learn how to re-cover the front seats in a style similar to the bench seat as they will be next to be upholstered. Oh, and the carpet needs doing...... cant keep that second hand camper-classic beige stuff in there........hate beige.... .....

Haven't had the time... .....

I've used it for taking the mountain bikes out.... localy.....

And I spent half the day sat in it whilst my son was sorting out his enrolment day at college.....but I forgot to take a gas bottle so I couldn't make a cup of tea with my brand new box of tea bags and dried milk..... ...

I do luv this camping life......why doesn't everybody do this..... ....
