Spent the morning in the hospital getting a tiny tiny lump of black stuff removed from my upper eyelid...

Even been advised to take the next 4-5 days off work because of the severe scratching to the cornea So I am having a nice long weekend before going back to work on monday. I dont think I will be doing much to the van

I wasnt doing anything at the time that needed protective gear Just looked underneath to see what was happening and the bit fell in my eye

Doesn't take a big lump to cause a lot of trouble does it mate? I got a very tiny splinter in my eye years ago cutting a Moggy in half with an axe. Thought it would sort itself out overnight but it didn't - proper painful next day and I was off to Bristol to a beer festival. Mate's girlfriend in Bristol was a nurse and took one look at me and told me I was going to the eye hospital. She was bigger than me, harder than me and could drink more than me so I went! They put me head in a clamp and then dug the splinter out of my eye with a needle - it had actually skinned over sort of thing by this time. The procedure didn't hurt as such but felt really weird and I just about passed out - doc said a lot of people do that for some reason. Ended up with a great eye patch and a bandage round me head and went off to the festival - where it seemed that the "theme" was for everyone to have fake injuries - loads of blood stained bandages and make up wounds - at least mine was real! I think it was a theme anyway - but I'd not been to Bristol before......

Hope you're back to normal soon anyway!

Just read this post end to end, I think rust killing is an obsession or an addiction, either way we must be mad I could make one suggestion, if you dont mind, I would turn down the wire feed a little and try welding in short bursts. Then you will have less excess to grind off
I find that trying to run continous welds on light panels can be wasteful of wire. Keep it up though, I am pleased that MK2's seem to be a little more rust resistant than MK5's

Hey Matt, you have my sympathy, I've done the same thing as well, it was bloody sore, but worse than that frustrating cos you cant get the muck out yourself

Hopefully you'll be grasping the welding torch again soon, We need to see Fler finished

My problem is that I can never get the new panel exactly the right shape so there are always big gaps to fill in (and the wire feed is already very low) Other than the rear window infil there welds arnt as proud as they look (the rear window was a real PITA because you cant get between the panels to remove the rust in between ) Oh and I normally do only do short bursts at a time (1-2" long then a few seconds break).

Just been playing with the lathe...

Modified some morris minor tie bar bushes to fit instead of the stupid ford drop link bushes...

I think I will need some better tools before I make any more though

I know the arch you mean... we have driven cars through it and even the 1926 truck, but that was a tight squeeze! I lived in that building for a year

I mean just a spot at a time and move the torch forward as you go on and off with the switch, I call it blobbing It means you can keep the heat in the pool but not use excess wire. do you have a Joddler, its a tool that puts a return on the edge of panels so you can overlap them to get a stronger joint. Also if you have gaps to fill cut thin strips of light gauge steel and use them as filler in the weld. Ignore me if I am preaching to the converted

I do have a joddler... and I have been known to use it on occasion

I think I have twigged why the welding hasnt been going so well though, I normally use (and prefer) 0.6 wire and it ran out so I had to stick an old roll of 0.8 in! I will buy a new reel tomorrow!

I used an old roll of wire when I did the rear inner panel....it looked like a pigeon had shat on it ....Still does

The worst was when I put my shelter up on the drive, I tore a disk at the bottom of my spine , you can have all the good stuff in the world but when you cant stand still the weld is still crap

I also know how it feels to tear your chornea, I ripped three layers (apparently you have six), my eyesight has never been the same since

The anasthetic drops they put in your eye at casualty is bloody fantastic though

Well it was fantastic while it lasted... all of 10 minutes

There was no mention of ripped, only badly scratched. All seems to be back to normal other than a little redness
