so i take it the molded one will fasten over the standard bumper

I think he means he's using this to make the mold so that new bumpers taken from that mold will be the same dimensions as the original. I.e. replace the standard bumper.
Of course I've been wrong before......
I'd be tempted to get one myself except I love the high ground clearance of my van. It's great being able to get under the engine without using ramps.
I was at a scrappie the other day and they had a LWB MK5 that had been cut short to just behind the wheels so as to fit a spec lift. That was a cool mod in itself but the front bumper had been replaced with what looked like 10mm plate steel! and it was painted bright orange. The guy was using it to move things around the yard directly! Looked like something out of Mad Max, I wish I'd had my camera.

i think some of these recoverys have a weighted front bumper not sure but i know what your talking about there is a 89 spec lift near me with a huge steel bumper on the front

i was wondering how it would fit to the van would the new mold(s) taken from this bumper fit onto a standard bumper or have their own mountings

stevew hit the nail right on the head hi all let me clear it up for you my friends i will use this bumper to make a mold/plug, from that mold i will i will cast a fresh bumper this will be a direct replacement for the original,and pick up on all the original mounting points. no worries, i'm doing all the home work so that if any of you get one it shouldent take any longer than half an hour to fit.

sevew juust had a thought you could leave the mesh out from the centre air scoop and be able to poke your head through there to work on yor engine the lower splitter would act like a pillow .....

not 100% sure but the mk3 bumper might have different mountings to the mk4/5
