I have been helping to build these types of mini artic for some years now, the law is not that hard to understand. In order to drive these on an car licence you must have passed your test before Jan 1997 meaning you have B+E on your licence allowing you to drive a vehicle up to 3500kgs towing a trailer of any weight this is misleading and being addressed in 2011.

So the facts are the tractor unit can weigh a maximum of 3500kgs loaded or Gross vehicle weight(Gvw) a ministry plate is required to confirm this , the trailer know as a semi trailer will also require a plate.
Now if you have B+E on your licence it will most likely say up to a max weight of 8250kgs, in order for a mini artic to be driven on a car licence the trailer must have a Gvw not exceeding 4750kgs meaning 3500kgs + 4750kgs = 8250kgs Gvw.

Someone said C1+E but C vehicles are over 3500kgs are Lgv, and could weigh up to 12000kgs but apply to 7.5 tonne trucks etc and require a test as again most are provisional.

If you call Dvla they will confirm in the case of these types of vehicles you must add the tractor units Gvw to the trailers Gvw, thats gives you the maximum potential weight or what it could carry and if it exceeds 8250kgs you cant drive it. Our advice is always call Dvla they make the rules regarding your licence, Vosa take care of road worthyness not licences i know a guy says he has a letter in which vosa said he can drive it up to 12000kgs. Yet the same guy cannot pass the medical to take a full class 1 !!!!. Call Dvla...

In 2011 a directive is being implimented the details are a bit vauge at present but worth a search on the net for european 3rd directive its could effect what you do

Any info about air supply for trailer braking and dealing with suzzie connections .

if anybody's thinking about building a mini artic i've got the full air brake set up and a mini 5th wheel, all parts are in good working order and can be seen working before there taken off. i also have a trailer for sale.

£1000 for the air brake set up and 5th wheel, the air brakes on my transit cost me £1800 and the 5th wheel cost £400, wanting £1000 for the trailer.
