My -79 Transit recovery truck

I've NEVER seen so much work/welding go into a Transit before
I think Fred was right when she said come on over here for a holiday even if you did weld up all our vans it would still be a holiday for you

:shock: wow what a lot of work you have done it has been very hot here to i spy a mk3 in the background too will that be next

The mk3 in the background is a -90 130 panel van with twin rear wheels.
I will use the engine (petrol), gearbox, rear and front axle ( with power steering) for my -79 truck.

The bus is actually very good in the cabin, at least in the front where i'm cutting. The rear isn't very good, very rusted.

I'd rather be working with the rest of the modifications than welding the damaged cabin. It really feels like it might never be ready.
I'm hoping to find a 78-85 160 pickup so that I can cut the frame just behind the cabin and swich it onto my renovated frame.
At this time it would be so very nice to do the preparations for the paint job, normally that's also quite boring but it's really much better than welding.

Update:
Today I lifted the engine and gearbox out of the engine bay of the truck. Sadly I found a lot of more rust, I don't know how much more I can take.
Anyway, here's some pictures.



Engine and gearbox, will not be reused.




The engine bay before cleaning it with angle grinder




Upper front end of the frame, with the support for the front bumper.




Area around the air intake for the cabin





Most of the engine bay cleaned.

Will have to remove the air intake to be able to repair it properly. The pieces needed will be cut out from the -82 bus.

I'm afraid I don't know what bodger means but it seems to be quite a lot of work on your 6 wheeler to.

I'd say I'm a bit of a bodger too, like to use scrap and things for other things than they were originally intended.

You should see my iceracing car, a complete mess of things coming from all kinds of cars.

Well sounds like you would enjoy the TV show Scrapheap Challenge then, the UK version not the rubbishy American rip off called Junkyard Wars.

For any others reading this I dislike the American Version 'cos it is always shove a V8 in and then big wheels and then it will work, the UK version is way more inventive with it's solutions to the challenge.

Yeah, it's because all the road salt they use, that and the fact that it's a very old truck and it hasn't always been taken care of to well.

When I bought it it was in really bad condition in the engine and all of the drivetrain, the frame and cabin wasn't really good but it wasn't as bad as it's today I've driven it for about three years.

My -79 doesn't seem to have had plastic protective mudgards inside the inner wheelarches but the -82 bus had it. Anyone knows from wich year it came as standard ??

Haven't seen that show but I saw the American version and an even worse version of it from Sweden. The swedes more or less never managed to build anything that worked..
