A vinyl wrap might work on the blue plastics or you could get it flocked 8)

You're not the first person to say that, but it's 2.5mm wall, so over spec. for what's it's doing. The only reason for the original seats to have diagonals is because they use much thinner steel to keep costs and weight down.

New stereo and reversing camera in. I had never seen the point in a reversing camera on a van, but having a spare one from another project and the new stereo having the capability to display a reversing camera when the gearbox was put into reveres, I thought I may as well. An adapter was used to convert the steering wheel controls to the right signal.

Once again a hole was cut into nice paintwork...

... and paint applied to stop rust (use of a cotton bud to save me having to clean a paint brush after such a small job, but be aware that the cotton bud will catch on the metal and leave strands of cotton).

Would say more down to basic engineering design.

Yes, but only required because they use thinner steel which alone can't take the side forces. I'll keep an eye on the welds and if there's any sign of cracking, I'll pull the base out and put diagonals in. :)

You wont see cracking, it'll be when involved in an accident.

I wouldn't fancy vinyl - too fragile... flocking is a good idea though, might have to investigate... :)

Picked up a set of Bongo seats tonight and have added a bit more vinyl to the van. Black vinyl on the black back windows.

nice work 8)

personally i think the seat base will be fine as it is (so long as the welding is good enough  ) the amount of force to split that would be massive - it's only holding the seat! the seat belt anchor points take all the force from your body weight - i'm building seat bases for my camper and i'm not having any diaganals :D

Exactly. Though if the belts were part of the seat (like in the Tourneo), that's another story and diagonals would more likely be needed.

hmm have to disagree there, not to moan as i love this thread and really envious of the great van you started with and the better van you've created but you definitely need a diagonal brace. Based on the two pics of your welds, I wouldn't trust my life with them and for the sake of a hour or twos work wouldn't you prefer not to kill your passenger? I was always told a pretty weld is a solid weld when i trained and yours look (albeit from a bad picture) a little uneven in places. Again not trying to be rude but would definitely vote for a diagonal brace. :D

OK "definitely" is a little much but it would be safer..

Good job there mate, If you are ever after a proper single seat base ive got one you can have but I dont know if it would fit, Its out of an ex BT mk6 passanger side. Its just sitting in the shed since I sold my mk6. If you want ill remove the seat off it and send you the base if you just pay for the postage.
Once again, Very nice work. 8)

Thanks for the offer, very kind, but I think I'll stick with what I've got thanks... too much work to do it all again :) I'm sure there would be someone else who'd appreciate it though.

i'll not keep going on about this - i dont want to mess the thread up but...... a mk1 transit seat is only held in by 6mm bolts they dont need to be strong as the weight of your body in an accident is taken up by the seatbelt mounts - the seat frame and mounts only need to hold the weight of the seat it's self, modern seat frames are much more robust as oftern they have the seat belts mounted to them if that was the case it would need a diagonal :D
