Yes...vv...erm...that's a lot of trust :) SU, don't know anything about them...and thinning needles, oh yeah, that sounds just like me! If only you could see the goo all over the carb, you'd understand just how technical I can be! :D

But SUs are reliable

I nearly made a manifold to run a zetec engine on SU carbs in the minor - but have gone down the megasquirt route instead

Have you got any left??? Now why would having the vaccum advance hose on or off make absolutely no difference??? :)

Air leak, busted distributor, or blocked tube.

I cant help but notice this ongoing saga, you may find it easier to sort the problem if you take on the well proven racing circle method of only adjusting one variable at a time, you will then be able to see if the adjustment youve made is actually improving matters or not, best thing is set timing as per ford spec, then you can adjust carb and find out if its knackered or not, thats my two pennath

Ah MM, i man thought like no other! At every attempt i try and sort one before the other but have only concentrated on the timing and carb. Today i thought b@gger it what if...

So turn out the mixture screw til almost out of the carb and popping gets quieter but as LB's instructions thats the wrong way round.

What i did find was that the more the screw was out the more i could turn the dizzy with no effect.

Took vac pipe of dizzy and checked...vac working at dizzy and through pipe i think, but on reflection they were both sucking...mmm

Decided that maybe the exhaust is popping, not the mix...so 2/3 turns out from in on mix screw and a very small turn on the dizzy. Bit noisy sporty but at least driveable!
