It was a very kind deal with Robbie Cee on here, he had it on his mk3 pinto...i originally had a weber 34 new in box to fit but it got stolen before i could afford to fit it :(

I have got it running smoother now but it still has a backfire when you turn the engine off...doh!

Still sounds like timing issue, cam possibly, but I know you said you have done that.

For the record, the cam timing is spot on, the tappets are spot on, the Weber is an unknown quantity. Timing is (or was Jono) spot on. There is an issue with the insulator block and gaskets beneath the carb and also a nut on the back of the carb to manifold that will not fully tighten. I will replace the Weber with another carb, VV or ICH but in the meantime Jono is addicted to turning screws and rotating distributors and despite receiving therapy for this he is unable to break the habit. Indeed, I firmly believe that even when this van runs spot on he will still fiddle with it. Its a sad thing but with all our help I think we can break poor Jono of this habit. I may fit a new carb with tamperproof screws and weld the dizzy in the right place if he cant give up, meantime all we can do is hope, thank you all for understanding

I hate fiddling more than you would ever know! Once it is all right i gladly sit on the bonnet as you all weld it down!

Mutts, i didnt mean to cast aspersions on any of the work you have done! Robbiemate im sure your carb is a great one. I am just trying to keep a little piece of history nice and i feel with the expertise on here i have alot to live up to.

Im sorry my efforts are seen as so destructive.

I think what everyone is saying is something's broke, fiddling isn't going to fix it.

I had a mini that was tuned up, in theory it runs better with a vacuum distributor, but no matter what I tried it wouldn't run right, in the end I ordered a special non-vacuum one, ran much better after that.

At the same time I had a pinto with a wiring fault for the ignition coil, that ran lumpy, started fine, just lumpy.

If someone has set up all the timing correctly, and adjusting the carb doesn't bring it into tune, then adjusting the timings will only send you backwards, bringing too many variables back in :)

A different carb as said is your next step, sure it will run fine soon. Have you tried another hobby like matchstick models or domino stacking ?

Just to save me trawling all through posts, was the initial 'misfire' effect whilst on a trailing throttle, ie when deaccellerating?, if so, your problem is more likely to be a leak on an exhaust joint, any where on its length, happy hunting
