it does look a little forward in the pic alrite but i had a wheel on and it looked pretty good in the wheel arch. i want to keep it a little forward if anything as i remember luke saying he had a problem with the steering knuckles being over stretched because of the rack being back a bit too far which he cured by moving the rack out from the subframe a little. although im sure i can allow for this while mocking up the column.

ya, we ended up welding the supports a tiny bit further back, hopefully enough. im figuring i should be able to leave less stress on the uj,s by keeping the end of the column as close in towards the bulkhead as possible. that will be another chapter!! :D

im working nites this week so we got another small bit done today.

got the two filler sections shaped and tacked up in place.

Image

then took down the subframe and welded up fully.

Image

for the front fixings i had first thought about just using the existing spring hangers but even though the r/h one is in very good order..................

Image

the l/h one has been plated over on each side with a bit of rot lurking underneath.

Image

Image

so the decision was made to go back to the bare legs and make up a set of tidyier looking drop brackets for the subframe.

Image

and surely when i started peeling the repair plates off i found some more nasties beginning to spread into the chassis on the left side. so we ill be cutting the last couple of inches out and making a piece to go in. this is slowing progress a little but i think its worth it as the rest of the chassis is so mint.

Image

Image

hope to get another few hours at it tomorrow.

yes mate i cured it by repositioning the column :D i welded up the steering knuckle in situ on my mk4 then fitted it to the fixed rack and the loose column - then welded the column in place :D

latest update,......

we continued with the chassis end repairs.

Image

Image

to save a bit of time i just removed the entire end of the r/h leg instead of peeling the spring hanger off it.

Image

and heres the replacment section my mate made up, i think its fair to say hes a top notch fabricator.

Image

there was a rectangular box section fitted across between the legs at some stage to replace the original crossmember. we decided to keep this as its good and solid and was fitted pretty well.

Image

so once the repair sections were fitted it was in with the subframe again and after one last measuring session we got the front drop brackets welded in place.

Image

Image

and next for the dreaded part of chopping through the inner wings to mount the mk5 top mount turrets.

Image

after sizing up the height they should be mounted to allow enough shock travel frank once again came up up trumps with a mounting.

Image

and in place, some trimming needed yet.

Image

Image

Image

and thats as far as we are for the moment, i have to get some more 1.5mm sheet tomorrow to finish them.

Quality work, looking forward to seeing this one finished!

Are you keeping the twin wheel set up? Redrilling the front hubs could be the option to keep the early style wheel. Another idea that i,ve been playing around with but haven't tried it physically, is that the rear wheel bearings for a mk 1/2/3 twinwheeler i'm almost certain are the same for a mk4/5 twinwheel axle, so in theory you could retain your mk1 rear axle but fit later mk4/5 rear hubs and backplates so keeping the same wheel type all round, in this case mk4/5 wheels. they're 15inch as opposed to the earlier 14inch rim.

plan to IFS our mk1 camper, but its on the long finger.

we got a good shift at this over the weekend, starting to make a decent bit of progress,......

got the wings off with a bit of work, these vans really were well put together with the wings bolted internally aswell. i took them off as carefully as i could leaving the option of using them again if i cant find replacements.

Image

Image

Image

the top chasis repair sections are now in as well.

Image

Image

Image

underwing areas are not too bad, just a small repair section needed each side, having the wings off also gave good access to the top mount turrets to weld them up on the outside.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

i nicked a few more bits from the mk5 for some mocking up.

Image

i also fitted a mk2 pedal setup which is a lot simpler than the mk1 pedal assembly. the bulkhead had cracked around the large hole used for the mk1 setup and needed replacing anyway.

Image

Image

Image

also set about modding the mk5 servo/cyl to fit.

Image

re drilled the bracket to take the two bolt fixing.

Image

i had to space it out a little as the brake was on slightly when it was bolted up to the bulkhead. so i just made up a shim from a bit of 2mm aluminum sheet.

Image

Image

the mk5 rod was a little short so i made up a sleeve and mated it to the mk1 end which has adjustment which ill be handy.

Image

Image

and sitting in place, worked out easier than i thought!

Image

next plan is to take it for blasting before tackling the rest of the body repairs. ive got it rolling again on a pair of 6 stud mk5 rims i got the loan of.

well with the recent spell of dry cold weather i managed to get her away for blasting and back dry thankfully.

it revealed a few patches and repairs i hadnt seen and a few more small repairs that are needed, but overall im well happy. the chassis and outriggers under the cab are mint. 8)

ill be bringing it back for a light blasting after we have done the rest of the repairs and ill get the back half of the chassis done then as it needs little or no work. then it ill be etch primed straight away hopefully.

there will be a slight delay in progress for a while as we now have marks recovery on the lift for some cab floor and chassis attention for the mot. it makes the garage look pretty small when its on the lift!!
