Started to tidy the underside up!

Postby ajpmsport » Wed Mar 21, 2012 10:07 pm

Well MOT time again and i keep promising myself to do something with the undercarraige of my van. Rust is creeping through and before you know it there will be holes. Ford seemed to do a good job with stone chip coating but not so good with the painted bits.
I cut out the grot on the inner wings and repaired, and done the two front wheel arches. Then it will be the rear two wheel arches. Then the bit in the middle. I was pleased with the results so far, What do you reckon ?

Yep, jacked the back up and put the stands under the axle. Knotted wire brush in a grinder, then jenolite , then stone chip protection in places, then sprayed it.( Masked off the rubber hoses first). I used rustoleum, realy surprised the way its turned out. Im thinking about doing inside the box sections with something. Waxoil would be best but expensive. I`m wondering about old engine oil and something mixed and sprayed inside. ?

Old engine oil as far as i remember is not good, has water and other additives which can cause rust
Lovely job by the way

old oil wont cause rust at all. we used to use it all the time on the bright steel work when i worked on the farm. does a great job of protecting things. not so great on cars as water washes it off after a while but better than nothing.

progress report

The crew van is ideal for a service barge and to travel in ..........

BUT to sleep in it`s a bit more difficult................Cuddle up to a few tyres..........
Ok for a one night race weekend. With the bulk head in you have to keep walking around the van.

I wanted to remove the bulk head and put a sliding door in it`s place but this is the main structure for the cupboards and shelves. The charging system is not working to well either. So i took the whole lot out.
We wanted to use the van the weekend just gone so i managed to insulate the floor and board it and make it a bit more comfy. Put the leisure batteries in tempory just to have some lights up.
I fitted an awning rail and awning and was really surprised how well it worked. No rain but was really windy Saturday morning to give it a good test. You can buy a bedroom which zips into the side, so now i know the awning works thats on the list aswell. Just keep on plugging away at the rest of it now.

By the way if anyone is interested in the side windows i will be replacing them for bonded ones at some point (the slidy window is cracked though).

Looks good mate, one day mine should look as good underneath :(
We have repaired the front inner wings, and fitted new front wings,
The rear inner wings are shot, the outer wings are solid.
A bit of rot on the rear box section,
When we get this last bit of welding done,we will blast the whole bottom with under seal
I think the underneath should be as clean as the top for the m.o.t.
even tho no,one sees it unless you run over some, one :) .
