MK2 Camper with a 2.5 turbo Di

Postby erling66 » Fri May 04, 2012 5:25 pm

Hi I just bought another MK2 Transit(can't get enough) :D It is a 1985 2.5Di camper.

The car is in very good technical condition but I think it is too slow. It is ok on flat roads but we have mountains everywhere in Norway and it is slow going uphill :?
Yesterday I saw a rusty 1996 MK5 with a 100PS 2.5 turbo and 5 speed manual so i Bought it as a donor car :D The engine and trans is going into the MK2

I am not very familiar with these Transit diesel engines. (My experience is with Mercedes diesel and I have another MK2 with a mercedes diesel viewtopic.php?f=27&t=103022 )
But I noticed that it had an electrical injection pump. I am not going to try to fit that into the MK2 so I am planning to put a mechanical pump on the engine.
So please help me with some info about the swap. Can I use any of the 2 pumps I already have, 2.4 York pump or MK2 2.5 Di pump?

I guess I can find all the info I need on this great site :) but it will take years to look trough all the posts here  so any help will be appreciated. If any of you guys need help with Mercedes diesels, ask me some questions here and I will do my best to help

I have read all the info I have found on this great site :D about the pump swap and I can see that everyone prefer the 145/6 pump. I tried but could not find one here(in Norway) so I bought this one:

Minormatt wrote: use the injection pump you have(415)... there are only marginal gains to be had using the more desirable 145/146 pumps.
So my question to you professionals is: What will be the difference between a 145 and the older 415? Is the plunger dia larger=more fuel? or is the cam profile different=same fuel in shorter duration? Or something else?
I have lots of experience with the Bosch M pump used in Mercedes diesels but almost none with the VE pump :?

At the moment Mine has not got a 145/6 pump on, just one of a 1996 Di and it goes fine. Just keep turning the fuel screw in until it smokes and goes well then turn it back out till it passes the MOT test(uk Only).
Plodding along.

that pump (its a pre '96 one) will be fine with the earlier injectors on the '96 ;) the 145/146 is more suited to post 1997 injectors  its also got the mechanical cold start on it whic you can attach a choke cable too or have an electrical switch on it

That is great news :D But wat is the function of the cold start? does it lower the injection timing closer to TDC? since the combustion chamber is hotter the closer it gets to TDC

I tested the 2.5 TD today with a Gtech PRO Fanatic. I only got 85PS :( but at 3300RPM :) I pulls strong until 3400, but after that nothing more happen. I guess it is the EPIC that starts to cut fuel to early, so I am not worried since that pump is going far away from my car :D I like to repair my cars with a tool box, not a computer :P

well as "normally" fitted there is a switch on the passenger side (LHD) which is closed when the engine is cold providing the voltage to the solenoid on the pump.

On the earlier ones, like you have there, provides extra diesel when the engine is cold making it easier to start. The later ones without the solenoid on the side just advance the timing slightly

I started to install the bosch pump today but ran into a problem. Where should the fuel from the filter go into the pump? the banjo in the front of the pump or the one in the back? Don't want to start cranking before I am sure it gets fuel :)

I found out :D In the front and return in the back. looking forward to tuning the pump :D :D :D
