MK6 2.O SWB 150,000 MILES

Postby djmf » Fri May 11, 2012 11:22 am

Just bought this van 2 weeks ago. Have just started to check it over. Changed the oil and filter. Fixed the siezed back door bottom catch (previous owner had fitted a bolt to keep it secure). Nearside rear lights connector had corrosion on the contacts which had stopped the stop and tail lights from working. Fuse No. 60 15amp had blown so no interior lights. Front pads are due for replacing. Clunking from the front suspension both sides which I am trying to trace. So far I have found the N/S track rod end is US, the wheel bearings are OK thank goodness, bottom ball joints are OK, springs are OK. No obvious wear in the wishbone bushes (suspension lower arm). When I lever up the wheels to compress the strut there is a slack clunking noise. Next step is to remove the struts and the wishbones for a thorough inspection because something is causing the clunks on both sides. If anyone has any clues as to the possible causes I would be grateful.
Thats it so far. davexx

The top bush on the strut is known for making a noise as both mines are  When you hit a bump can you feel it on the wheel arch inside

Thanks for the strut bearing info. Going to have a look if it ever stops raining up here.

Will post some pics as soon as I take some. Had a problem with the front brakes hanging on a bit and got the tip on the forum of releasing the metal retaining clip on the flexible hoses and cleaning out the rust build up. It worked for me.

The noise from the front suspension (rattling or clunking) whike unladen at walking pace on partial or full lock while bumping down off the kerb or going through a pothole or a bit of rough road. Straight line laden is ok. Not had time to check it out yet. Will take some pics as I go.
thanks.

Side loading door stopped unlocking with the key or the fob. I found that the electrics, solenoid was making the right noises and it proved to be the door catch needing adjusted inwards by 2 mm. an easy fix. It worked for me.
