While taking my car to the m o t shop i found myself following a breakdown
truck with a landliner on the hook.
I had always fancied landliners because they were based on the mark 1
transit and i liked their body shape compared to all the other campers
i had seen in the past.
Fortunately the truck turned into the same industrial estate i was visiting
so it was a good opportunity to chat to the driver who had stopped for a cuppa.
He was taking it to a breakers yard. It had been partly restored but the owner
had been beaten into submission by his nagging wife who did not share his
enthusiasm for landliners.
After talking to the driver and looking closely underneath,
A compromise between what was asked and what was offered was struck,
including delivery.
When it arrived the look of horror on my wife's face was a picture.
"what have you bought now she stammered?" " you can take that away now
i don't want that cluttering up my back garden parking place".
After i made her a nie cup of tea she calmed down and agreed to look
inside. I think the recovered Captain's chairs with built in headrests and
two arm rests won her over as they were so comfortable.
It sat for about a year while i looked for an engine and gearbox to fit into it
that would have the power i wanted to climb hills and attain cruising speed
effortlessly. It also had to have a auto gearbox.

Im enjoying your thread :) the above memories reminds me when my one arrived on a lorry and i put it on the driveway

Hi Transit lovers.
I'm back with the next chapter.
My prayers were answered when the phone rang one day.
It was my son in law who worked at a garage in Tolworth
on the A3.
a car had failed badly on its MOT & the owner had decided
it was not worth spending lots of money on it & took an
offer from the mot tester.
I rushed over & bought it. It was a plymouth valarie with
a 318 crysler engine,
The engine sounded very sweet, but the body & chasis
were extremely rusty hence the mot failure.
I took a risk and drove it home no mot no tax.
I joined the A3 heading north, It is a three lane carraige
way and hardly a car on it as i sailed homeward.
Thats what yanks do they float like a boat but so comfortable
you could almost go to sleep.
I got the urge to see how powerful she was & pressed the throttle
to the floor the auto gearbox changed down & away we went
under full steam, the exceleration was immense.
I was pushed back into my seat as the two ton car rocketed
forward, It changed in to top gear at about -- miles an hour.
My turn off was rapidly approaching as the speedo needle touched
the magic ---.
The adrenaline was flowing.
Y
The car was a bit unstable at that speed but luckily there were no
cars about at the time allowing me to try its raw power.
As i left the A3 the speed limit became 40 mph then 30 mph,
This gave me the chance to feel the full power steering on the
roundabouts & tight corners.
It was effortless.
The auto box worked extremely well.
The yanks certainly build engines and gear boxes that are quiet
and smooth.
The gear changes were hardly noticeable.
We arrived home safely and with a big grin.
I had trouble sleeping that night as my dream camper had a new
powerhouse to be inserted asap.

Hi Transit lovers
I back with some more stories on one mans landliner.
Before continuing my story i would like to apologize
to all transit & landliner owners everywhere for what
i am about to do.
Some people might not agree with the fact that it
won't be original inside & out. But i intend to bring it
nearer to the 21st century.
It will retain the classic good looks of the mk1 Transit
but with improved lights. power steering. more
powerful engine as the beautiful v4 was alright in the
panel van but after fitting a camper body and all the
intiereor it was asking to much.
auto gearbox & improved brakes.
It will also retain points ignition & a carburettor as
these can normally be repaired at the roadside.
Should there be a problem.
modern electronics need specialist training &
diagnostic equipment.

I won't bore you too much longer as it is sunday today
and i like a beer or three on a sunny sunday afternoon.

It was early summer when i started to dismantle the yank.
Removing every usefull bit i could think of that might fit
the landliner to improve it. crash absorbing bumpers.
Mounted on great big springs would absorb the impact
should you hit something not to hard of course.
Included were the beautiful engine & auto gearbox
radiator.power steering box. brake master cylinder &
very large servo unit. Brake & throttle pedals.
propshaft. wheel trims & hubcaps.wiring harness
with switches.window motors & dashboard.
The shell of the car was then towed away by the scrappy
to the breakers yard.
Allowing me room to park the landliner in my back garden
to begin the transformation from camper to who knows
what the end result will be. If it ever ends.?

Hi Transit Andy
Unfortunatly the picture of the camper were taken some years
ago & due to some bad advise the paint work has deteiriated
some what,
So the pictures don't reflect the camper as is but it's not too
bad, but without some paint work it won't be a show stopper.
Thanks for your interest i still have a long way to go to
finishing it.
Would love to meet up with you some time this year.
