About three months passed before i phoned fred to find out when he would
be available to start work on the Landliner.
A date was set for a saturday & sunday as he teaches metalwork in a colledge
during the week.
He duly arrived bringing with him a trailer full of tools & equipment,
After a nice cup of tea & a chat followed by more tea we both drink a lot,
Tea that is.
He unloaded his trailer & began by poking & proding the offending area's so
he could assertain how bad the rot was & decide on a plan of action,
He first photographs the part to be rebuilt & removes it carefully making an
exact replica of the panel taking pictures as he goes to show his pupils.
The panels he makes out of 18 gauge mild steel or whatever the original
thickness was.
When finished you would not know it wasn't original,
I recon he could make a silk purse out of a sow's ear in metal.
The task in hand was monumental both steps & door pillars had to be rebuilt
including surrounding floor & inner wing panels,
It took months as i could only afford him every third weekend due to lack of
funds,
The time came to remove the windscreen only to find more rot where the
dashboard meets the lower windscreen panel but not a problem for our Fred.
I had previously acquired a new offside front wing & a good second hand
nearside one which needed some minor repairs from a very helpful firm
called golden days who specialize in second hand Transit parts,
I bought a new laminated tinted windscreen with a blue band at the top & a
new rubber but forgot the expander strip.

Fred & i carried on regardless of whatever we might find on our
journey through Eve. Fred had finished the cab repairs on his last
visit,
So it was now a good time to attack the engine cover,
You would not believe how long a job it proved to be.
We decided to make te cover in two pieces a top section held down
with toggle clips & a bottom piece bolted to the floor,
the reason for this is so that we can easily gain access to the carb
& distributor if need be.
Fred first made a thin piece of angle iron to the shape of the floor &
a piece the shape of the bulkhead, He then made two side pieces
using the angles as patternes to follow the contours of the floor.
He then made the four joinining pieces out of mild steel & welded
them together.
Then came the top.
This was made out of five main pieces but by the time he had welded
all the safety edges on the top & bottom covers it had consumed
two weekends of Fred's time.
I now set to work stripping the paintwork under the bonnet & repainting
it including under the dashboard & of course "The Engine cover."

The years have flown past since buying the Landliner,
We now have 5 grandchildren aged between 12months
& 9 years ,
Eve has progressed so slowly it is not true, but she will come
together soon "we hope" as she is taking up valuable garage
space.
The summer is just beginning the year is 2006 the lack of
money has been the main hold up apart from the ceiling
falling in & the idiot man cutting through the main
supporting structure, the fact that the bodywork had been
bodged up, the fact it was absolutly rotten with "metal &
woodworm.
Considering all these hindrances & the fact i could not find
the right help to begin with i think we have progressed a
long way,
I would like to take this opportunity to give a big thank you
to Fred & Steve for their invaluable help,
I could not have got this far without them but we still have
a long way to go.

I am just about to collect new windows for the living quarters,
The reason i am replacing them is because i am re arranging
the interior,
the fixed & opening windows will be in different places but
retain an escape route on both sides.
I have just purchased from a car boot sale a wicked pair of
headlights as an extra pair of eyes for the van,
They include halogen bulbs for dipped & main,
A side light & indicator light i paid £20 pounds for them
what a steal, hope you'll be as impressed as i am.
I am definatly going on holiday NOW.

Thank you jonochap for your comments as i was not sure if i
was boring the pants off of everbody.

Will post a few more lines before i go on holiday, have got a
few jobs to do on the old gel before we go.

It is now time to do the outside bodywork filling sealing &
getting her ready for painting,
I started by removing the old sealer & sealed all the joints
with modern stuff that paint sticks to or so i am told as
i don't know much about filling & painting so i enlisted the
help of our ex son in law who is a painter & decorator &
friend of mine also offered his help to remove all the old
paint so it will be a bare metal & aluminium respray,
I called a friend of mine who does fibre glass work so he
could repair the roof where i had removed the ascot water
heater chimney.
When all the paint was removed there was lots of dents &
other damage that had been painted over probably by the
last owner.
I am running out of time as a new law about useing two
pack paint is coming in october i want it done before then.

I remembered a young man i new years ago called Robert who does bodywork,
so i tracked him down to help with the repairs.
What a suprise his hair was grey i forgot it was fifteen years ago since i last
saw him,
He promised to come over on saturday the 2nd of september as he has a full
time job,
It is absolutly amazing how with a little from your friends it all came together
in no time at all.
Now what i need is some warm dry days to paint it, as it will have to be painted
outside in the open air as it has no brakes or steering we cant tow it anywhere.
I was going to paint it myself but not knowing about two pack paint i phoned a
friend of mine who tried to explain it but i could not grasp what he meant so
i asked him how much he would charge.
He said a hundred for cash i said when can you do it.
A date was set for thursday friday & saturday as it will be in three coulours,
Whilst waiting for the big days i carried on inside for better or worse i decided
to use expanding foam to insulate the inside which will make it warmer but also
stick the panels to the frame to make the structure more rigid & quiter.

No i have not left yet as i have a problem with my differential.
I will have it sorted this week i hope god willing as i can't go
to dorset.
Monday came the ex son in law from now on called Jamie
arrived & started to rub down the bodywork in preperation
for the painting it was a lovely sunny day ideal for the job
in hand.
Graham the painter duly arrived & got stuck in rubbing
down & started masking it up,
He started painting about half past two the alluminium
in a special primer sort of light brown & then the whole
van in grey primer.
The transformation was truly amazing after all the years
of hard work that had gone in to it.
It was suddenly starting to take shape,
I was a Landliner owner once again.

Now it has a coat of paint all the imperfections are clearly visible so back comes
Robert the not so young grey haired body man to do some more filling & sanding
it is now monday the 11th of september.
A second coat of primer has been applied she looks absolutely stunning in her
grey livery.
I can't wait to see her in her finished coulours,
I hope i have made the right choice of colours but won't know till she is finished.
The roof is going to be in offwhite beige living quarters & darkish blue cab,
possib'ly with stripes or lines on the sides but have not thought that far ahead.
Once painted i can start putting all the bits back starting under the bonnett
with the power steering box power steering pump & all the other bits i removed
whil'st painting was in progress.

Then comes the dreaded electrics,
but luckily i have the promise of help from a neighbour who is an electrician &
is rebuilding a karmon ghia vw including rewiring it so help is at hand if i get
into difficulties.
