Mk1 Camper Restoration.

Postby Phill_H » Thu Dec 21, 2006 11:43 am

Well here she is, my 1977 mk1 camper, ready to be restored to her former glory for her european tour in 18 months time (ish)

she sounds like a bag of spanners and the body work is in need of
a lot of TLC.

She is currently running a 2.0 pinto engine.

More pictures will follow along with pics of work as I do it. :)

(Project is running along side rebuilding my house, rebuilding my spitfire and new baby in jan) 8)

The pics make her look a lot more solid than she actually is.
I'll be taking a few more detailed pics of areas as I work on them.

BUT the camper side of her seems to be in good nick :0)

1st job is to get her to run a little better, She won't start without a fuss,
and sounds horrible, but she was stood for a long while before
i rescued her. :)

Well the starting is a long series of bangs then suddenly she'll fire,
which I was putting down to the alternator, and the fan belt makes a
lovely sqreech, (neighbours love it).

But she doesn't pull to great either.

The plan was to replace alternator and belt, repair the holy exhaust and
see what to make of her when I can stand the noise to think :0)

I've been trying to identify exactly what work is required,
But after spending the last 2 week doing this, I decided it comes
under the categary of a lot.

Anyhow, started with trying to get the engine to run, Well with a bit of
a tinker, I managed to at least get her running, although she doesn't
run very well and doesn't start very easy.

The fan belt is now removed to replace with a none knackered belt,
but my local motor factors gave me the wrong belt so this needs changing.

I have managed to do a spot of welding on the floor pan of the cab, and
started to repair the passenger side step. I'll take some photos to
brighten my progress report up a little bit.

Anyhow work has started so watch this space.

After a morning playin in the rain, she now runs on all 4 and actually sounds
very sexy, I think I'll take an engine shot for good to measure, and to spice
my progress report up ;0)

Anyhow, Next job.

Wire a loom to the rear as it has been cut.
Repair exhaust blowing at manifold and hole in back box.

Big thanks to the guys been giving me advice in technical with touchy engine.

I wouldnt bother trying to repair the hole in the back box, I'm pretty sure ther are the same as the Mk2 Pinto engined ones and are readily available for about 20 quid :D

Well the engine was only firing on 2.
So for good measure I checked all the timing, replaced the plugs,
removed leads checked them and then replaced, then altered the points.

And hey it works.

Its gotta get itslf an mot soon, so need the welding doing, repair the loom
and sort the exhaust, then send her to see how she goes. :0)

She drove 3 miles up the road, ran beautifully, although the surround on the
headlight fell off and got squashed by the person following me

She is now stored in a nice dry unit, where she doesn't have to
contend with the elements, and I can get some work done. :)

Watch this space.

AAAARGH! don't you just hate it when that happens? Exactly the same thing happened to me with our previous Mk1, I thought I had run over a wheel trim till I stopped and noticed the (specially chromed) headlight trim missing.
