Mk5 recovery project

Postby Gtitom » Wed Dec 12, 2012 10:46 pm

Hi, finally got myself a transit flat bed, been after one for awhile now as im sick of hitching trailers on and off! Found it on auto trader for £500, the pictures were crap and description was vague. At £500 i thought it was a good deal either way!

Problems listed were..
Used to have a wooden bed with alloy sheet over the top. Wood had been removed when i got it.
Needed welding to the sills some of which has been started.
Winch motor was dead.
Clutch dragging and hard to get into gear
No mot or tax

Heres some pics when i first got it back last week.

So the alloy sheet was clamped on, so stripped that off and worked out what steel supports it needed, i did not want a wooden bed! Welded in some lengths of steel, bolted and riveted down the alloy sheet and also re did the ramps.

Also fitted another winch and wireless remotes.

Next i pulled it over the pit to have a look at the sills, they had already been cut out and half started, i had no idea of what the orginals looked like or where they ended up, horrible job not proud of the outcome but its welded up now atleast.

Did look better after a coat of paint and undersealant.

Image

The previous owner had fitted new front wings, and had primered most of the cab. I had seen alot of posts over the years of poeple roller painting cars, as its cheap and can have good results. So stripped the cab of seals, bumpers, mirrors ect..

Image

Bought paint, rollers and a brush for £40 started painting tonight, tbh the roller was crap even though i used foam. All it did was create bubbles unless i put on really thick coats and then it ran. Did try different amounts of thinners but didnt help to much.

Heres the first coat.

Tomorrow hopefully be able to flat it back and put on another coat, doesnt need to be mint, it looks better than primer anyway!

Only has single rear wheels, which although legally carries the weight, i dont think it looks great, and all that weight over 2 tyres doesnt fill me with confidence!

Collecting a rear end cut of a transit lwb twin rear wheel tomorrow so ill have all the bits to convert it to twin wheel.

Ill also be fitting a turbo at some point aswell!

Comments welcome! Thanks for reading

Paint wise you are best using foam gloss rollers. I've been practicing and have had good results with them.
Anyhows, good progress, keep it up.

I was using gloss foam rollers from screwfix, they were recmmended by someone that had done there transit!

I think it may be due to the temperature im paniting in also, ive boughtna spacer heater today so hopefully the second coat will have a better finish.

I also picked up a rear cut of a mk4 twin wheeler today, asked for a cut so i had all the bits to bolt straight on. unfortunately i didnt realise the leaf mounts are different, so got to find the mounts before i bolt it all on.

So turns out i was sold the wrong axle for my transit. Ended up buying a mk5 axle from a ambulance, so has a decent ratio diff and possibly lsd aswell!

Rear axle is bolted up in place now only got the wheels on the one side atm, still got to make brake lines and a few other bits.

Image

Also started to put some of the trim back on after the paint job, second coat went on loads better, could do with a 3rd to make it perfect but not to fussed!

Paint job turned out ok, the second coat went on much better without running, a third and fourth coat would have produced a great result. Im the sort of person to slap it on and put it all back together so dont have to much patience for painting! Its good enough for me!

And yes i spoke to a guy over the phone who said he had a mk4 axle for sale he would let me have a chassis cut, went and collected it from 70 miles away got it back and went i compared the mounts to mine it clicked!

After a few heated conversations he still wouldnt refund me and was telling me it was still a mk4 axle. Very annoyed as payed good money for it!

Put a car on to test the new axle and leafs, sits slightly close to the top rail when loaded so might add another leaf at some point.

Sits nicely at 60mph with the low ratio diff, but could do with a turbo conversion to help it pull through the gears better.

Used the transit a few times now to move a few cars and a trip to the scrap yard keep forgetting to take pics!

Anyway bought this last week ldv tipper with the transit 2.5 td engine! Was already converted to a manual pump, but rather than mess about swapping engines, i just swapped the turbo bits on to my engine. Its also the 100ps model.

Nearly done now along with a service, engine oil clearly hadnt been changed in awhile.

Bought the earlier TD down pipe, which doesnt fit, so just waiting on the new down pipe to arrive!

Cannot wait to have a bit more pulling power as sometimes going up hills loaded isnt to much fun.

Turbo conversion is all done, used it to scrap a van and a trip to stoke today to collect another 106.

The torque is alot better now, although i still think i could do with a 145 or 146 pump to match the 100ps injectors.
