Mk3 Crew Cab Recovery truck

Postby chrisb205 » Wed Nov 13, 2013 7:43 pm

Hi guys,

Well after looking for ages Ive ended up with this Mk3 E reg truck.

I first looked at this and didnt really give it a chance due to its age. Then after driving up and down the country a bit looking at 1997, 98 and even 99 Mk5's that were in a terrible state or were poorly converted flat bed / pickups, this seemed to get better with every other tranisit I saw. Plus this was only 10 min drive from my house. So I went round the houses a bit.

I couldn't even find a decent chassis cab in my price range for the spare body i got.

This is the beast.

Obviously its had a mk5 front end put on it.
Its pretty solid and has a decent back on it. Plans are to sort power steering reservoir out as its got a PAS box on it and pump but not the original pipes linking it all up, looks like its had some made up. Thats all fine its the bodge of the pipes and reservoir thats a mess. Ill get some pics up and an add in the wanted section. Looks like a need res and pipe from res to pump, also res mounting bracket too.

Used the truck a couple of times this week and all was well except temp gauge dont work and winch is a bit slow but works ok at the moment.
Attempted to tackle this issue...

As you can see its a right balls up. Leaks everywhere and looks like she will blow any minute. Got a reservoir with pipe work off a focus on ebay cheap so thought I could couple up something better than this effort.

On removing all this the pressure feed pipe from pump to steering box is a right bodge of welded pipes and unions with bends and twists. on removing it snapped pipe so truck now off the road. gutted.

Going to sort it tomorrow. Will be needing to get original pipes at some point to sort this out.

Anyway, can someone help identify this engine please, I was told by seller its a banana engine with old inlet manifold on it and air box?? Im wanting to full service it with timing belt kit but not sure what to ask for.

Also the throttle cable is an another bodge I don't want to open up unless I have all the parts to repair correctly. From anyones experience do you know what I may need to repair or replace this effort.

Is that a mk2 cortina?
Not sure what it weighs not had it over a weigh bridge but going to put it on the ATL lane at the MOT test centre, the brake tester weighs each axle.
