Mk7 330 Swb Dayvan/camper project

So, picked up my new (to me) van from MVS in Sheffield last Thursday. Spent more money than I intended to but they seemed to prep them better than others I'd seen. Had them paint the bumpers as well but I think the front is too orange and needs breaking up.



Then I headed off to Van window services in castleford to have the rear windows fitted. I have fitted my own before but for £279 fitted it wasn't worth doing as I'd have saved £30 or so. Excellent service and really quick and tidy job done.



Fridays job was to get the diff ratio changed, these run a 5.11 from the rac but 1st gear is next to useless and in top the van is screaming at cruising speed. Drives so much nicer now. Transaxle services in Halifax sorted this for me. Happily the speedo is still reading correctly

Next stop was Dorset, I met up with the mrs and kids at the in-laws on the friday and managed to tie that in with doing a straight seat swap with a fellow forum member with a single passenger seat for my double on the saturday.


I have these to put on next week once I decide on tyre size and type


Longer term plans include insulating, carpet lining, rock n roll bed, small kitchen unit/cooker, installing my stereo when the fascia plate arrives, tidying up the holy dash and putting it back to standard.

think you need to paint the grill mesh a different colour, maybe the euro 5 silver

thats a low miler for the rac must have had a fault they thourt wasnt worth fixing, there still out working with 180k on them

what are you wheels weight rated too, that will be class 7 so tyre load rating will be checked

I was thinking silver as well.... Think it depends with the Rac where they're based. The more rural ones rack up mileage. This one was based inside the m25 according to all the parking offences in the service history printout. They had some there with 70 odd thousand on and one there with 220. The wheels are rated to 1250kg each. As far as tyres go I think I need them rated to 111 or 112 but the closest I can get is 109 on a 255/55/18 these will maintain a bit of ride comfort to hopefully. I test class 7's at work so I'll check it against the axle weights and see how far out I am. It's never going to be loaded near its dgw for the use I'm putting it to so I'm not really that worried.

Maybe been a Heathrow car park van, done lots of slow miles in first/second gear, and plenty of ticking over !

I guess that's the problem with buying a used van, you don't know where it's been or what it's done. You'd hope that an ex-rac van would have been driven by someone with some mechanical sympathy maybe not. Fingers crossed it won't give me too many issues. It's had a clutch and flywheel at 86k so that should be good for a bit at least.

Bought mine from autoalloys.com. They were loads cheaper than ebay (£142 each) but they've gone up a little now but still cheaper I think. They are bloody heavy if that's any representation of their quality !

Not managed to get much done this week, fitted a new stereo to replace the naff one the rac put in. It randomly switches off until i switch the ignition off then on again though so I need to look into that. Also need to get rid of that lump off the top of the dash.


Also had my tyres fitted and my wheel nuts came so put them on this evening. Tyres are perhaps a bit big but the load rating is high on them and the rolling radius is very close to standard. Doesn't drive much different to before other than the wet grip being better which I wasn't expecting.

Found a bit of time today to sort the bulkhead. Pulled it out cut it up and put the bottom bit back in. Probably won't stay that way but it'll do for now. Insulation next week. Lots of info on the vw forums so I think I'll do some research and see what's best.
