My Mk6 restoration project.

Postby Tobylex » Thu Feb 27, 2014 11:19 pm

As i am currently in the process of removing some rot out of the underneath of my van i thought i'd best put up a few pics.

A combination of the dreaded tin worm and roads littered with pot holes caused damage to the rear spring hangers. the passenger side pushed up the ply floor and the rear wheel had moved back around 3 inch!!!  . I was nearly at the point of calling time on it and getting another van but a lack of work caused those plans to be shelved and a major rescue operation started.
Image
after lifting one side of the ply floor and setting to with the angle grinder i had a reasonable hole in the floor.
Image
the rot had started to extend into the main chassis rail so it was cut out on on side and a length of 100x100x3mm box was fitted. anothe piece was fitted into the sill.
Image
new cross brace is from 80x80x5mm box section with a 30mm overlap underneath. the new section for the spring hanger will overlap the full width of the cross braces.

once i've got the front spring hanger mount sorted then i need to do the rear on the passenger side and then sort the drivers side front hanger which is in a better state than this.

As iv said before this is a proper job! If only ford had used such a strong set up, even if they was to just have done that sort of work around the hangers.

Think ill be doing the same to mine when the summers here.

Mines pretty solid around the hangers but gaurentee it wont be come MOT in Jan.

Well done mate :D

Bit of a delayed update. welding work is now done.
Image
repairs to drivers side hanger.
Image
I was getting fed up with having to move tuff round to get tools out and having to balance 8x4's on top of it all.
Image
I've built a half false floor so all the tools can be stored above the floor so if i need to load sheets in they can go on the floor.
Image
been busy installing a 150W inverter so i can charge batteries on the road or on a remote site.
Image
Inverter supply witch and single cab socket. (cr@p iphone photo)
Image
Twin socket in rear near sliding door.
Image
next job is tidy cab out.

Sorry to drag this one up, but I have the exact same issue with my transit.

The garage tell me they can fix it, but its uneconomical. I really don't want to get rid of the van as everything else on it is fine !

Do you have any photos of the repair from underneath the van at all ? Or can you tell me where you welded the box section to under the floor ?
