Transit mk7 SWB dayvan/camper

Postby sc_BK » Sat Mar 29, 2014 10:18 pm

Thought I better put up some pics of the van we bought, I still have my LWB mk6 though!

Here she is the day we got her at the end of January

Have been slowly working on it when I get the time and weather, gonna make it into a basic camper. It's a Front wheel drive medium roof, so there's just enough room to stand up in the back :)

Image

Image

The whole van is pretty manky, every little nook and cranny was full of dirt, woodchip, and gravel. Henry the hover has taken a beating!

I stipped out all the old ply, cleaned it all out, then painted the floor whilst I had access to it, to try and help prolong it's life

Image

I had some old ply from another van that was in reasonable condition so have reused that

Image

Also removed the bulkhead and fitted a single seat instead of the double

Image

And just at the weekend I fitted side and rear windows. These were on and old van of mine that I'm using for parts, was a pig of a job to remove the glass on the rear doors, but got there in the end

Image

I think the black tinted side window suits the paint 8-)

To buy the glass would've cost £250+, so all it cost me was £25 for windscreen removal tools and £25 for adhesive   and a whole lot of time!!

I was hoping to have the van ready for this weekend for a Scottish Vanners meet but unfortunately that hasn't happened :|

Both of us had a chest infection at the start of march so I was out of action for a couple of weeks - it came from someone at herself's work :x

It's getting there though :)

Bed frame built, made using 3x2s etc, it's pretty sturdy!

Image

It's quite high up, but I built it at that height as it's the widest part of the van (couple inches extra headroom) and makes plenty of storage space beneath

Image

I was originally planning on building a unit from scratch to fit the space, I have plenty of cupboard doors etc, but in the end I used a 3 drawer unit that came out of a kitchen being replaced. (a house being done up, I saved numerous items from the bin ;) ) The door fronts are solid pine, but were fairly tired looking, so I gave them a new lease of life with a splash of paint :)
I cut and painted gloss black a bit of ply to fill in the space on the wall, and act as a bit of a splashback

Image

Passenger seat swivel fitted :D 8-) 8-)

Image

Unit almost finished, got the worktop and end panel for free :) I had to make the left hand door out of ply to fit the gap (it has now also been painted)

Image

Chickens inspecting it

Image

Eberspacher wiring :? .
also leisure battery fitted and wired up with an automatic voltage sensing relay, and nice thick wires :)
The leisure battery is a nice big 135amp/hr Banner Energy Bull, hopefully last well, but pricey!

Image

There is a secondary fuel port already fitted to the sender unit on the tank on the Transit mk7, unfortunately you have to raise the van and remove the tank to get at it!! :|

Image

Eberspacher night heater fully plumbed in, wired up, and working!!! :) :) Great bit of kit 8-)
Toasty!!

Image

Whilst the van was up I noticed one of the front suspension drop links was missing :? , so I bought a new pair, but as per usual the nuts were seized solid and the remains & other side had to be cut off, so a quick job ended up taking hours and hours :x

Oh and the main van battery had been changed by a previous owner to a cheap one, and they hadn't bothered to strap it down or even connect the vent hose!! :|
Anyway it was knackered, fitted a nice new battery today :)

Fitted a crewvan type seat in the back of the van

Image

And also a pair of curtains for the back windows. This was another rescue from landfill/bonfire. They were a very hideous bright orange but one pack of fabric dye later and they blend in :)

Had a few more cupboard doors lying about, so fitted one as a blank behind the crew seat and made a small cupboard under the bed

Image

Cupboard under the bed. There's 6 of the wire baskety things that can be slid out. Bottom 2 levels are ideal height for tin cans etc :D

Image

No before photo for this - When we first got the van the over cab shelf was absolutely manky. I think someone had spilt oil/petrol, which reacted with the rubbery sound deadening mat, and turned the whole shelf into a sticky gunky mess
So after many hours of scraping with wd40 and thinners I managed to get it all cleaned off and into a useable state :)

Fitted carpet (tiles) yesterday, makes it a bit cosier. They were something else saved from landfill so it only cost a tin of contact adhesive :)

Image

The doormat is a good quality recycled tyre one that someone had dumped behind a wall by the main road!

Found a way of securing the spare wheel, trolley jack, and 30" breaker bar in the back, still need to stash away some wood for chocks too

Image

Also wired in some LED lights, got 2x 120cm strips, 2x 60cm strips, including one in the over cab shelf as you can never see what's up there!

Image

And made a row of coat hooks, fitted using the existing holes in the roof support

Image

2 LED spots pointing out from just inside the top of the side door, for if you're sat outside the van

Image

Switches within reach of both the side door and bed ;) :)

And another 2 lights pointing down on the worktop, these are really bright, so you can see what you're doing! But cos they're hidden by the strip of wood you aren't dazzled by them when stood in front of the counter

Image

All the LED lights are just cheap ones off ebay, and switched independently so you can chose what to have turned on.

Well a year on from when I started, the van is due a bit more work. A project like this is never finished!

The cupboard door underneath the bed had recently started falling apart - it was just a cheap louvre one I got for free! It had to be crowbar'd out, and I made up one from a scrap of ply to replace it.

Something I'd been thinking of for ages, made a slide out table that's easy to reach from the front swivel seat and the seat in the back

Image

Image

Lined the roof with the foil bubble wrap insulation stuff. Not so much for the heat, more to help reduce condensation on the roof in winter.
I also fitted a flettner whirly vent about 6 months ago

Image

Image

Next up I'm going to re-arrange some of the lighting to make it a bit better, and also a couple of the lights have packed in

Fitted new wind deflectors after the last set were nicked when I was last away :x

Image

Started having a look at the rust (usual spots), and unfortunately the side door is much worse than I originally thought - through to the other side after a scrape! :(
It will have to be replaced and for now have been slapping the Vactan on. As per usual for here, as soon as you get a paintbrush out it starts raining :x

Image

Fitted some snazzy colour changing lights, six quid off ebay, remote controlled aswell :)

Image

You can pick any colour you want or leave it fading in and out between colours 8)

Nice job Mate :)

Looks like your single seat is a drivers side seat like mine :?:

Have you moved the adjusters on it to pass door side of seat :?:
