1990 Ambulance

Postby KerryB » Wed Apr 23, 2014 4:41 pm

New rear doors are now fitted, much better than the rusty holed old ones. I did like the windows though but I have a solution for that...........reversing camera. The doors still need a bit of adjusting but not going to bother just yet as the rear panel needs some work on the passenger side, will probably weld a new panel in but I am thinking of flush fit LED lights, I just need to find the right ones. I have been given a Ford Galaxy 2.3 petrol in dark blue, no mot so I will be taking the seats out and scrapping the rest, if anyone needs any other bits let me know or it goes to the scrappy.

I seem to have converted to the dark side, I only got the Transit because it was cheap and there were no Bedfords or Vauxhalls around for that price up here, but now, the more I drive it, the more I love it, even with the manual choke and no power steering, it just has sooooo many possibilities.
I will keep you all up to date with the progress.

Well today I have started to take out the Premier Hazard siren box and the dash switch pod. I will only need a few extra switches for the camper conversion and I am planning on repurposing original dash switches for interior rear lights, reversing beeper and rear flood light. Looks like I will have two huge holes in the dash, yippee cup holders ! I will fix the holes at a later date when I take the dash out to cover it, for now though I will just put something over the holes to stop things from falling through.

I still have more wiring to remove, but it is under the roof lining, I need to take all the fibreglass panels out anyway so tomorrow might be spent drilling out rivets. I will replace the windscreen after the respray, this one is de-laminating which is a shame because the glass is near perfect, no major scratches or stone chips.

Loads of wires, thankfully they are mostly covered in a plastic braiding so removing them is a bit easier. I want to remove the Ambulance light up plastic panel in the front of the roof and get it filled in, think I will give that job to a fibreglass specialist, I want it to look as though there was never a hole there.

Well this one now has a new mot, only needed 2 new rear tyres ( original 1990 ones has perished on the inside ! ) co2 was high so adjusted idle and mixture screws and passenger rear light wasn't working, new bulb sorted that one. I'm working on the inside roof panel at the moment, got to take out the windows on the sides of the roof to get it off then I need to fill the holes where the 3 interior lights were and the air vent and plans are for a clear Perspex roof panel twice the size of the lift up roof window ( I can't remember the correct name for these but I know what I mean ). I have new board for making up the panel above the cab and some lovely old Bristol Rell6L bus headlight surrounds in stainless steel that will work well with a speaker and air vent in them for the front and rear of the rear compartment. Will put up pics ASAP.

Yeah, slightly addicted now, I must say it is more comfortable than the Bedford CFs that I have had in the past, a lot quieter too ! Gone and got another 2 now, Mk2 camper and a Mk3 ex RAF LWB ambulance, now I can't wait for that one to come home, 2.3 and power steering, I will add new topic when it arrives ( no mot, been off the road for 2 years, needs a new screen but everything else seems to be working fine, will book it in for mot when I get the chance )

I replaced my camper doors with solids - just used the dremel on them and put the windows in the new doors. Took a couple of hours.
