Another member on here has a replacement bonnet, (the one on Bax is a bit sad), he would like to 'trade' it for a few new panels. Be good to get a better one as bits of it keep falling on my head :shock:

What seats have you got?

Fresh from an enjoyable time at Transitmania we have returned to do a bit more work on Baz.

We managed to secure a bonnet from Mutley, this will be painted and fitted shortly and is in far better condition than the one currently fitted to the van.

Work has begun on the O/S rear lower corner area, we were lucky to obtain a NOS Ford part 8)

Here we have a picture taken from inside the van, the light showing through the 'hole' can be seen;
Image
This shows the extent of the corrosion above the rear lower corner panel.

By the time the rear lower corner panel and surrounding 'rot' had been removed it was obvious that some repair panels would need to be manufactured.

Here you can see how much of the surrounding metalwork needed to be removed;
Image

We then temporarily fitted the rear lower corner panel and produced a repair part for the area behind the reversing lamp;
Image
Part of this 'join' will be hidden behind the lamp.

The repair piece was fixed in place with screws and then 'tack welded' to the rear lower corner panel, (access for spot welding was not possible with the panel secured to the vehicle);
Image

Another repair piece was produced to go from the vertical seam forward to the rear edge of the wheel arch, a 'return' was added to the panel to match the wheel arch shape. The rear part of the panel needed to be shaped to match the original body contour;
Image

This part needed to be temporarily secured to the rear lower corner panel as it was not possible to spot weld the parts 'in-situ', this was achieved with self tapping screws fitted from inside where the panels met;
Image

There is a 'closing panel' to the front of the rear lower corner panel that needed replacement, this was fabricated;
Image

This part was fitted behind the rear lower corner panel and 'tack welded' in place;
Image

The complete 'assembly' was then removed from the vehicle, leaving the parts held together, allowing for spot welding. Here we see the self tapping screws in place;
Image

Here we see the parts after spot welding;
Image

The 'closing panel' to the front of the rear lower corner was also spot welded in place;
Image
Image

The temporary 'tacks' of weld can now be removed leaving a 'factory look' to the repair parts.

The use of the vehicle as a 'jig' for temporarily aligning repair panels works well for older vehicles that were assembled using 'traditional' hand held spot welding techniques. But do remember to make sure that the 'sub assembly' is put together in such a way as to allow it's removal from the vehicle for permanent welding :idea:
