Mk 5 recovery truck from the start

I got a mk5 transit recovery truck for Xmas 2014.

She was placed off road and started stripping it. It was December 2014 and weather bad so not much done.

I was pretty shocked by its rust and supprised it made it back in one peace with even a Micra on the back

Its now march 2015 and done a few cab floor patches

I will admitte this is a massive job for me.

I've done the drivers side cab wheel arch not too bad but now I've cut all the rot out of the passenger side I'm starting to worry

So this is my first real challenge on this truck and where I am today. 06/03/2015. If I get passed this problem I will up date as I go. ANY advise gratefully received. I keep thinking I've bitten off more than I chew with this one.

Im same with mine i keep doing little bits then think why bother. I start looking at newer stuff and read about on here the problems of rust on the mk6 then the engine problems and i think shes not so bad this old girl and keep plodding on

Mk6 ? ? Had a jumbo mk6 didn't have it long lol engine problem after engine problem went back to a mk5 van within 6 months

I know how you feel, I'm just looking at 1 bit at a time coz when I stand back I think why am I bothering haha but like the micra on the back that too should of been scraped but I used it for a personal challange and it's on the road (£20 pound car) but the truck I find meself scratching my head and taking a deep breath. I have a thing about Mk5, spent money and time. I won't qwit lol

So it's not very nice weather here decided to have a play with the problem heating on the truck. This is a 1996 mk5 with recirculation heating and a knackered two way switch. This has two plugs in the back of the switch.

After testing I found 1 live 12v and managed to at least get the fan to switch on that's good news that works. Here comes the head do er.

People and I understand that the heater resistor is by the front headlight. Nope not on this 1996 nothing at all in the engine bay or headlight. So I had a look at my 1999 swb mk5. Nope no resistor or wire for one in the 1999 in the engine bay or headlight.

This confused me lol placed a post on here to be told my 1999 dosnt have the resistor in the engine bay but in the cab by the heating fan motor. Seams Ford changed it after 1996. Dug out my Haynes book to check this out.

True the later mk5 Ford changed. Both my 1996 truck and my 1999 swb van do not have a resistor by the headlight. It's on the motor !

I still need a new recirculation switch whitch seams very hard to get hold of. You can not replace that with the comman switch without cutting up the wireing loom

It's on Mk 3, 4, 5 section under ' anyone got one of these or where I can get one ? '. I will post one on here when I get home. More cutting, grinding and welding today. After dealing with unwanted under seal. That's a really sh.t job

Just to say the Haynes books are wrong. And there is no wire going to the headlight for the resistor. Back to scratching my head lol there's no resistor by the motor ( as described by Haynes) and no resistor or roge 3 wire's hanging around the headlight or engine bay. Looks like that's going to be a bummer to sort too.

Still plodding on tho lol must be mad

I understand the resistor is ment to be by the headlight on the truck thing is there is not a resistor by the headlight on the truck. I know They rust off or even fall off which would leave a unused wire ( 3 wire's in it) with a 3 pin plug on it in the engine bay just hanging round like on my N reg 1995 swb mk5 did. Easy fix that one.

My s reg 1999 mk5 has it's resistor by the clutch pedal.

But this p reg 1996 mk5 beavertail dosnt have a resistor by the clutch pedal or by the driver's headlight lol no sign of one or a wire with 3 wire's in it hanging unused.

Thanks for the link. I have two mk5 vans 1995 and 1999. One has resistor by the clutch one has one by the headlight. But this 1996 nothing lol

Got shitloads to sort out on the truck may need the heating next winter gives me a year lol

Could always wire fan so it works on 3 only, just run power to switch to fan!
