spud_mab is back with another van, this time a Mk6 tourneo

Postby spudmab » Mon Mar 14, 2016 6:15 pm

As the title says I'm back with another van, this time a Mk6 tourneo, I have has a few other vans over the years but not done anything with them apart from drive them, lol.

Anyway I pick up my new tourneo a few weeks back for the pricey sum of £450.00 it's a 54 plate in not to bad condition. The reason it was cheap, well where do I start,

The biggest problem it had was every time you let of the throttle the van died, turn the key and it would start up again. It's apparently had a mondeo engine swop and it's never been right. Well I managed to get it home and I plugged my code reader in and it said ATC, so i started to have a look about and I found out that there was a few loose plugs, looked underneath and the ATC sensor wasn't connected, plugged it in and the van runs with out the cutting out.

Next on the list is get it to perform like I think it should, so yesterday I decided to pull the turbo, egr system and inlet manifold to give it all a clean up, the vanes on the turbo where nearly ceased solid and the egr system is nearly blocked with gunk. Might explain the lack of power.

Anyway I will get some photos up later

As you can see the engine is a bit of a mess, plus most of the aircon parts have been removed, witch I need to find, it has rear aircon as well so I think it's harder

Paul2012 just fitted a mondeo engine in his mk6 so he might be able to iron out any spare plugs

The only part of the loom I'm confused with is the sub loom that plugs in down behind the drivers side headlight, it plugs into the air-con pump, not sure where the other plugs go, can't seem to find any connections around this area

This is the plug where it connects to the van

Thanks paul2012 I have just seen, I did notice that you are close to me when I read your build, was thinking it would be handy to get to know you as you seem well clued up on these later vans, I'm more old school Fords and motorbikes,

Well today is a good day, finally got everything rebuilt and freshened up, stripped down the turbo and completely rebuilt it, cleaned the inlet manifold and fitted new rubber gaskets, cleaned the egr system, repaired the drivers side engine mount, replaced the airbox as it was broken, fitted clamps on all the pipes as most where missing, filled up the power steering fluid and repaired the mounting bracket, repaired the headlight wiring, fitted new electric wing mirrors, repaired the abs wiring loom, fitted the drain of pipe work.

Some other bits but can't remember, the van started first turn and it seems to rev really nice now, both mirrors work spot on, head lights now work, engine bay is looking like it should.

All in all I'm very happy with today's progess.

Just out in from a test drive, all I can say is wow, the van seems to be flying, seems loads faster than my 2.4 mk6. Well worth the cut nuckles and dirty fingers.

Just have a few minor issues to work out,

Battery light is staying on all the time, have checked the relays and fuses and it is charging,

A whining noise from the power steering.

But all in all I'm a happy chappy

Just been our and done some work on the inside of the van, replaced the passenger air vent as it was broken, fitted the secondary power socket at the bottom of the dash, wiring was there, socket was missing.

Things are really taking shape now, hopefully be on the road Thursday 24th as insurance should start then. Couldn't get my insurance swapped from my other van as the tourneo comes up as a car, lol, can't work that out but insurance company have transferred my 8 years commercial no claims bonus to the tourneo car insurance.

Still not sure what's causing the battery light but I'm thinking of buying a new voltage regulator and trying that.

Also any one have any suggestions on sorting out a floppy gear leaver, I have check the 10mm bolt at the gear box end and that is tight.

Transit van is vehicle cat N1 (Light goods vehicle)

Tourneo is vehicle cat M1 (passenger vehicle) same as normal cars & MPV's. Plus you can drive at the normal speed limits set for cars.
& road tax price is different compared to vans
