Mk6 DIY restoration

Just picked up a 2002 t280 75 a few weeks back with 105k on the clocks

This is to be used as a car so won't be doing any work so to speak

All the work is going to be done by me more of a learning curve than anything else

First job was to heat gun the bumpers back to life, 50/50 shown below

Does blasting the bumpers with a heatgun make them go black?

Hi yes it does. Brings them up brand new

Great repair job, good tip with the heat gun, I did that to mine before deciding to 2-pack them same colour as van.

It draws the remaining oils in the plastics back to the surface, you can get the same result by wiping them with linseed oil let down with a little white spirit. Tung oil works as well but takes an age to dry/ polymerise.

In the long term the heat gun approach isn't the best as eventually the plastic become very brittle and discoloured - if you look at older cars in the Middle East where they have lots of heat you can see this.

Sorted out the outer sill under the sliding door today








I started by cutting out the old sill and cutting the new one in half. This was more manageable for me to get it mated to the body better

I've finished welding the sliding door and linished it flat but I havnt got a pic at the minute

I also went to remove some surface dust from the rear drivers sill and found it was full of filler so I've been sorting that today





It should look factory once I've fillered it

The full van will be getting a respect aswell as a mk7 front end conversion

I'm uploading the pics of the steps I'm taking to hopefully help people on here out of there thinking of doing similar repairs them selfs
