Good evening everyone,

Today we got to the brakes... Front brakes went ok.. Right side wouldn´t come off, so we had to heat it up, at the cost of a bearing (or what it´s called) They are fitted now, both sides.
Rear, different story. The Haynes manual didn´t say anything about the giant bolt fitted. We meassured it to be a size 65
We used an oversized water plump plier (or something like it) and no problem in getting it off.
But now the question. Can it be reused? My mec. is not sure if it has to be new, when fitting new brakes... if reuse, do we just tighten it again as good as we can or does it have to be with a certain torque? I think it had Locktite on it too?

Brakes in general:
I seem to experience the brakes working on/off. If they work, they work for the whole trip. If they don´t, it seems that I can turn off the engine, restart and then the brakes are back on.
I´ve seen the some have experienced problems with the flexitubes, but I´m curious about the brake booster (is it called that?)

Ford expect the big nut to be replaced if removed, it is a giant nyloc type nut.
One side is left handed, the other is right handed.

They are torqued to about 400 Nm, I'll check now.

Edit: And having checked it is actually 425 Nm.

Damn.. that are about 30 £ each + VAT in DK
Changing the brakes is turning out to be quite expensive

Unless they are damaged your possible alright reusing them.

425... thats quite a lot.. is that really so?

So now the brakes are all done and fitted with Brembo discs and pads They seem to be working fine. But I still experience the brakes not working from time to time. The brakepedal is rock hard. If I turn the ignition off and back on, it´s working again and the pedal if "soft" and working. It´s only happening at ignition start, not during driving.
New brake fluid and all
I have no faults on the IDS what so ever.

Did you use ids to do the service bleed of the abs pump ?

Next time the brake pedal is hard get ids connected and check the abs.

Well, it seems I´ve got bigger problems here..
The van is really not behaving... So its not only the brakes..

I really hope it´s down to poor batteries as the van, before I got it, had not been driving for several months and there was absolutely no power what so ever.

I have cleared all the faults and errors with the IDS and none is staying atm.

But I have some strange behavour, whitch I hope is down to the electrical. The IDS says I have only 10 volts on the batteries... charging seems not to be working and I´ve tried both a charger and a 2 hour drive. Once started it delivers 14 something volts.. and everythings seems fine at first...

But...

The brakes work on/off. They almost for sure don´t work the first time it´s started. The pedal is rock hard. Restart and the brakes work.
The turbo works on/off too... restart and the ok (fault appears on IDS after that)
The powersteering seems to be very heavy and not working properly at idle. If i rev it, then its much better.

I also have a noise from the generator.. well from the rubberband (don´t know the name of it) when the van seems to be underpowered... it´s only when driving though... at idle it sounds like a need engine.
When the power is "ok" it seems to go away..

I also experience the "click click" thing, when your car battery is all gone. The car just wont start, and everything flashes and it won´t start. Think we´ve all tried that in our life with any car... but then I can wait 10 sec. and then it will start... slow but it starts... Damn, it´s not funny.

But to get this startet and to kill all speculations about batteries, I managed to get 2 brand new from Varta (same as fitted) before closing time. Now I just need to get the old ones out and these fitted.. And I then hope that at least some of my problems are gone!!

My mec. has a junkyard nearby and there is a van similiar to mine, so please.. think of parts I need to check, if this is not the answer to anyting...

ps. the vacuum pump seems to be working.. and the brakes are marvelous when working and the turbo too... well, you know... still feels like driving with an ancher thrown... but I´m not going for anything before this is sorted out

Well, batteries are now fitted and it starts much better...
I feel that the turbo is much stronger noget and ther power steering is better.
I still have some noise from a drive belt, but that must be something to bother with later.

I started it up, and the brake pedal was hard again. I had rolled 100 m., turned it off, back on and everything was fine. Drove for 1 km. and the pedal was hard again... Here comes an addition.. I thought is was due to bad batteries, but I had to turn off/on again til get the brakes working.. and it started and cut off... started and cut... and by the third time, holdning the starter/key it kept running.. I took it on the motorway and it seemed fine and all was ok.

No error codes to be seen...

Please lads... what to do from here?

The vacuum pump is mechanical, this means that unless I'm mistaken, the only way the brakes can go hard is if the flexi hoses etc don't release or the abs pump or something is locking on electronically.

The vacuum pump is on top of the water pump it is the very small pulley on the right side.
