son in laws Mk6 Transit High top

Postby deadbeatdads » Wed Nov 29, 2017 1:18 pm

Ok thought it was about time i started an update into son in laws Mk6 Transit. He bought this a few months ago, looked a tidy van until he was driving it home and found a wheel bearing had collapsed, So a new one ordered with new brake pads as the disks looked fine and away we went to put it back on the road.
A few people stated the disks would be a pig to remove from the wheel bearing shaft, but i found a bit of heat around the disk where it seated onto the hub and it came away a treat. New hub also sourced as the old bearing had really bitten into it and away we went

However having a good look underneath other than a coating of waxoyl it looked clean, until we put it in for its MOT and we came away with a two sided MOT failure sheet
Lots of welding, rear chasiss outriggers, inner sills were covered in a thin sheet of metal held on by sealant, steps had badly corroded, some rear seats had been installed and welded tot he floor of the van, no rear seat belts both side steps badly corroded and inner wings needed attention

As you can see the underside is not too bad you can see the inner sills that need attention and so new arches have been ordered ad inner wheel arch and sill repair panels ordered

cut out all the old rot and shaped a new section to go in to form the side panel. Once butt welded in the welds were dressed back to make a nice smooth finish

Next was to cut back the outrigger to good metal and shape a new piece from 2mm plate to slot in. That was but welded in with a nice plug weld on to the new section piece

was just tidying up around the new section when another hole appeared on the other side of the outrigger, wish id just made a complete U section however a new piece of plate was cut out and welded in,
Once welded in all gaps were sealed with seam sealer and a coat of black Hammerite for the time to stop the new stuff rusting
