Mk5s camper/trailer project

Postby Pocketrocket » Thu Jan 11, 2018 11:18 pm

So after I fitted the jag engine in the first of my mk5s I was left with this bit of a basket case Mk5 shell, so once I'd restored lukes old tourneo and put the lump in that we chatted about what we could do with the old shell.
It was quickly decided that I should build a trailer that resembles alans photoshop.
The only trouble was I only had 1 van so another had to be sourced. Luckily another basketcase Mk5 rolling shell came up locally and the project was on the move.
The vans have been parked up for near on 8 months but now the tourneo is on the road I've a bit of breathing space it's time to get them chopped.
We started cutting the vans just before Xmas 2017 so not much in the way of progress but as usual I'll update as regular as I can.
Anyway enough gassing time for some pics 8)

Another little update from tonight, I've temporarily mounted the body's on the chassis as I needed to make it mobile to move around, the body's will have to come off again to cut/joggle the roof sections and weld the seams up properly but I think first impressions are that it's gonna looks the tits when done!!
Wheel arch attached with magnets just to get an idea 8)

Thanks chaps, very early stages and has got to come apart again for the roof but it gives you a rough idea!

Spent a few hours on the trailer this weekend, split the 2 half's, joggled 1 side of the roof section so it meets nicely with the other and fully welded up.
Even managed to get a skim of filler down the sides over the seam.
It's now sat back on the chassis and is now mobile again.

I've also bought a new handbrake cable for the pass side as on the mk6 axle there is a long and short, I needed another long cable to suit where I'm mounting the bracket for the brakes/handbrake.

Refurbed and painted the springs too as the others are just temporary, just need to fit them now,
Only took 3 pics today

Nice work 8)

You do know that all newly constructed trailers require a IVA before they can be legally used on the road

Here's the inspection manual
