jamies mk4 rot box.

Postby jamie182 » Sat Oct 12, 2019 11:30 pm

this is my MK4 transit crewbus D quite a rare beast as it has no side loading door and originally would have had wooden longitudinal benches in the back.

i owned it for a coupe of years done a few small jobs.
i have been gathering parts for a while so finally decided to make a start.
i pulled the original engine out and sold it. i have a 2.5TD to go in, makes the welding in and around the engine bay far easier with no engine in there.
the front right sring hanger/subframe mount was rotten

it was worse than i thought it was going to be ended up going back to the engine mount had to sort the captive nut and crush tube out as they came detached.

got a local boat builders (who happen to have a nice folder) to fold me up a bit of steel to replace the chassis section that had rotted away.

got a replacment hanger from ebay fits pretty decent did have to trim it a little at the front to to get it to sit right and keep the original position of the sub frame mount

should hopefully be a good one once its done, it will be quite a while yet.
for now i'm getting both front spring hangers done and all the engine bay and transmission tunnel repaired and painted. fitting the engine back in so it can be mobile again without getting 4 or 5 lads pushing .

To save me from madness ill break up the welding jobs. I have a full dash and loom from a Mk5 Tourneo, the Tourneo had electric windows, central locking, power mirrors, rev counter, alloys and twin airbags. I have already started installing all of it into mine, the doors as there different and i didn't want to swap them over yet, for me to have to take a freshly painted set of doors on and off when i fit the wings and aches.
After Christmas i think i will get the front wings, arches inner and outer, sills inner and outer and steps and cab floor all sorted out, hopefully next summer get a camper conversion started.
Between then and now i have a few smaller jobs to keep me going, wiring needs adapting to the mk4 rear loom lights rear heated screens passenger lights Ect.

Ill be giving the rear axle a service, i think it was weeping a little oil from somewhere. According to the I.D plate its a 4.11 axle so want confirm this at the same time.
Has anyone got a 4.11 axle on there van? whats 70mph like on the motorway revs and noise wise?
on my mk5 190 recovery truck (i think is has the 5.14 axle) 70mph is so bad its just not worth thinking about! the engine is almost at 4000rpm
i normally just sit with the lorry's at about 58.

here is a couple more pictures
front N/S hanger

20191009_210126.jpg

the hanger i bought for the N/s wasn't as good a fit as the other one, appeases to have been slightly off when it was welded together, pattern panels are never perfect. Still better than if i had made one/ patched up what was left of the original
its offered up at the moment tacked into place ill get a few pictures Monday

the filler on that front wing was about 15mm thick where its broken off!
hopefully going to put some full days into the old girl this week see if we can get some metal back into it.

You're a brave man! I'm happy to see another one saved. Can you tell me what purpose this van served when new? Is it for prisoners or something? Seriously, why would a van not have a side door?

I remember the Police had them, you do not need seatbelts when you have inline benches, a side door would only open onto the the back of the seats so would be redundant.

I remember when at comprehensive school in the late 80s and early 90s we had the same layout in school "minibuses". I think they were mainly LDVs, but may have been some Transits too. The PE teachers used to use them to transport football/rugby teams to matches as I remember one teacher used to love to drive off with us all laughing as the last kid tried to get in the back....

I doubt they would get away with that or the bench seats now.
