1982 MK2 100L ex. Mil. ambulance

Postby Works » Thu Apr 30, 2020 3:40 pm

Hello,

Been working this van for a while now, engine (Pinto efi -> zetec 2.0) conversion is about done and finishing on repairing rotted panels.

Next part would be upgrading mk4 or 5 front suspension, i cant remember which one it was out from.
Everything else is quite clear on the conversion, but before i cut and junk the original steering column ill ask:
Which steering column have ppl used who has done this and how? I dont really want to use mk3-5 column/steering wheel or any other related stuff, also the column cant be welded in any way, so no cut & join old and new, which adds some challenge.

Axle swap started:

Drilled new holes in leaf spring mounts 30mm backwards from old hole to get wheels centered:

The strut actually doesnt go far from old mounting point: Measured about 0.5* caster /0.5* camber:

But ended up cutting the wheel tubs and going to use mk5 strut top mounts

The Ford A series had mk 2 type column with a u/j on it instead of a full length shaft the ones we had wear 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pickups .

I've read the ifs thread here several times and going to copy the strut top mounting, exept for using adjustable top mounts. (theyre already ordered, but not arrived yet)
Welding any of the steering parts is not allowed here to keep it road legal, so it might add some challenge how to do the column. I'd like to keep the light/signal & ignition lock original as they are in mk2.
Probably going to go to scrap yard and salvage an mk3 column and see how it fits or how the parts could be mixed.

A series = bedford? anyway those are really rare here, going to have to use something else, hopefully mk3-5 parts as theyre plenty on scrapyards.

Hi the Ford A series was not a Bedford it used a mk 2 steering column and switch gear the only difference in the cab was the steering wheel was larger in the U.K. they called them the in betweener when they were at the time going to change the driving license categories so you couldn’t drive a 7 1/2 ton truck on the car license so Ford came up with the A series that started at 3.5 ton up to the maximum you could drive on a car license proposals the bigger ones had a 6 cylinder York engine in them .
Basically you had a full ladder chassis that they then bolted a mk 2 pickup cab on to it so needed a steering column with a u/j on it .i don’t know if this was a just a uk thing but they dropped the drop the idea and ended up staying with a 7 1/2 ton car category license .

Well the top mounts arrived and look like this. They were like 40ish € and for are for some bimmer.
Made a top plate already, filling the holes and welding them in. The sleeve 2mm is too big, have to make new one.
Otherwise you can prettymuch see whats my plan to make these from pictures.

Removed the steering column, had to hack & slash about every part to get it off.

Cutted rusted parts and the old steering box mount away:

Made new parts rather than trying to clean these from rust:

Closed up the old steering box hole:

Made bracket for power steering pump, which is from a '99 volvo v70.
Image

Steering column is now also shortened, mixed mk2 & mk4, just need correct belt now and the steering is prettymuch done.

Noticed how much more angle getting now than before.

Also started trial fitting shock mounts, which i cut from the same v70 i happened to have as donor car. They dont seem to be so far off that i think im going to use them.
