My mk6 bus

Postby bobdebouwer » Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:23 pm

Just a couple of pics from my minibus refurb.

Rusted worse than I expected, so had to go and buy more/bigger panels but very slowly cutting out all the rot.

Some scrote had bodged some repair panels in with tigerseal or similar, welded over the top of rust and just over all made things much worse for me.

I've got the other 3 wheels strap to the bed and that's a 20 ton jack. I'd rather that than a little flimsy 2 ton axle stand but I appreciate you thinking of my safety.

I also hope my welding is up to the task as well. I've just bought some new mig wire and tips, as I can't get to grips with the last roll. I'm just taking it slow, only cutting out what needs doing, rather than giving myself pointless extra work.

Well, it turned out the n/s b pillar gusset was holed in a few places, so spent a few hours making up a new section. Since I need to replace both the front and sides step, I wanted it to be strong again.

Welding isn't great but serviceable, and since I can get to both sides, I did a lap joint using a hand joggler and a couple of initial spot welds to hold it in place. Quite likely over kill but I really don't want to be back here anytime soon.

Are you using joggler to punch holes and plug weld at the proper joins??

Yeah, only spot weld to hold in position as I didn't buy any really long clamps. Once it was in, I lined everything up with the inner and outer sill to make sure it would all fit.

I'm cutting up a couple of old vauxhalls, that have galvanised panels, to save some cash after spending a few hundred on panels.

The plan is to treat as much rust as possible, even under carpets etc, so that I shouldn't need to worry about it for a few years.

On to a little bit of therapy.

Ended up dusty as hell but definitely worth the effort to take everything out and de rustify the front floor. I do love vactan, quick acting and quick drying.

I'll stick some paint down tomorrow, and then need to clean and paint the seat bases.

I managed to get 3 coats of paint on the floor, looks a lot better already, even if you won't see it. I'll add some sound deadening before replacing the carpet, should help it not rust again in the future, well not from the top anyway

Chucked the step plate and panels on again to recheck the alignment, ready for the front step to arrive tomorrow.

and finally, sorted the driver seat base out, and painted it white. I'll be painting it to match the new outside colour, so didn't bother cleaning/prepping too much.

I'm still waiting on the front step, so very little progress has been made.

Made up a couple of little panels, welded a few bits and just some general little odds and sods.

I think this wing will be fine

I've stuck the wire brush on it and treated it with vactan

Then a quick coat of rustoleum.

Still unsure whether it would be worth just buying a new panel, they aren't expensive :?:

Slapped some paint on the wing and base to see what it'll be like.

I'll need to sand it back and do it properly but I'm definitely liking the colour.

Just about got the step ready to fit, after it finally arrived. Had to chop a little here and there but it fits great and I'll do that Monday.
