I have some of those too, but same problem, the diameter is too big to fit inside the guard, and the centre is too big for the spindle.
I guess I'm going to have to buy a modern 5" grinder

You can get different grade flaps.
They're brilliant at grinding and smoothing. But if you could make a scotch bright disk I think that would be awesome for paint work. Samd paper isn't very user friendly tbh. Depends what you want really.

Believe it or not, I have one of those hand grinders  We used to use it in my shop about 50 years ago

All I want to do, is remove paint and loose surface rust from the lower areas of the van (under SLD and wheel arches), so that I can treat and re-paint, before it needs welding. It's too much to do by hand, but I'm concerned that the angle grinder discs that I have are too abrasive, and was just looking for something a bit kinder :?

You could try these,

https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead ... QIg&adurl=

For paint removal I wouldn’t use anything coarser then 100g then wet n dry 240g, 400g.

Sand paper is good if you buy good grade paper, mirka, liberty green ect not that cheap brown paper sh*t from the diy sheds.

Today I’ve been spot sanding (by hand) all the stone chips on the bonnet, now I have lots of wee dull patches

You'll find it will just create more work. I did the arches on snowflake and they still come back. It seems that after 10 years they become more and more work. I'm sad to say that I think the idea of keeping a van longer than that is false economy :(

It seems that the powers that be really want us to live by pay as you go.
Then at retirement just go

We can fight it but in the end we'll lose.

Happy Bank Holiday though :P

I'm under no illusion that anything I do will be any more than temporary, but it's more likely to pass an MOT if it looks like you're trying to look after it.
Slightly newer vans with many more miles than mine are still fetching ten grand, and they will still have impending rust issues, and a brand new van, even a basic one, is far too much money for the amount of use that I have for it now. It makes it worth spending a fair amount of money every year to keep this one on the road, especially as the engine is barely run in :P

Absolutely. The prices at the moment are stupid. I sold red for 9800 @ 65 plate and 20k miles.
It could only happen to me ffs that they go up in price.
Just saw a 2005 plate minibus in good condition selling for 4-5k

I just laugh at these things tbh it ain't worth my upset.

I theorise that a good spray of clear lacquer underneath would keep it clean and nice and rust free. Bituminous makes a mess, waxoil actually seems to accelerate rust that is already visible and it's messy.

You can actually buy arch trims for the mk7 they stick on and are like the sport trims but low profile, I considered getting them for snowflake.
