what to do with the roof

Postby hotrod_boogie » Sun Dec 16, 2007 10:48 pm

am currently gathering all the stuff together to do inside the rear of my van, its a MK6 semi high top, can anyone give me some ideas for the roof, will that ribbed carpet stuff stick to the roof ok or do i need to board it or something first? and will that carpet go over the strenghening bits that run accross the roof ok? any help would be most appreciated. :)

hi

have never done this so it is just an idea.

strap the van roof with 1 and half strappin,,, u should be able to fix it to the strenghtening post with screws,,then use a pine channel lining board to cover it with,, it will turn out superb,, gives u the option to stain, varnish, or even paint it,,,also its so easy to work with, flexible enough for those awkard tight corners !!!!!!

I used cheap thin ribbed carpet stuck straight to roof (between ribs) with carpet spray adhesive, quick and effective...

if this helps you as when i do my roof iam gona use hard board and then glue the carpet to it then fold the edge over the back and glue and staple that then as i will cut the board to fit 1st and when got the carpet glued on screw it with wood screws but make sure you use the metal beems as you dont want to screw screws tho the roof now do you
but thats my idea lol how iam gona do mine to the roof with carpet but not put the screws tho the roof tho to out side

no idea if this one may help,
but i have just done the roof out inside mine using u.p.v.c. building cladding
tucks nicley into the rear end above the rear door,
slide first piece into side channeling,
and secure with screws to the overhead strentheners
3 full lengths is enough as each can be cut in half for swb transits,
6 pieces is spot on without dong any full length cut downs to get it to fit,

looks the biz when done,
and reflects available light nicely

sure,
i'm gonna get slated for this because i have not updated pics in my own build yet,
so your sort of seeing them first

view of roof form outside rear doors,

and of drivers side corner from inside
Image

theres two supports across the inside - i used these to secure short screws into
screws are not much longer than the thickness of the upvc,
i then used screw caps from B&Q to finish the roof off neatly,

at the front i cut the ends of the upvc to meet the end of the cab roof liner,
thres a gap of about 5mm between the two,

i then simply used a piece of 2" x 1" to screw through to lift upvc cladding to meet roof
which could be prior painted white = or alternativley upvc stockiss have finisher peices wqhich could be used instead
