Crew Cab Recovery - Turbo Engine Install

Postby johns » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:47 pm

In December last year I bought a Turbo motor (4EA) / gearbox / loom etc off ebay to upgrade my recovery truck.

After giving it a full service and changing the electronic pump to a manual one, I've finally managed to fit it this weekend.

Getting ready to remove old engine!

Just waiting on the new exhaust system, then we can give it a test drive and see what the power difference is!

Thanks to my Dad for all his help and thanks to you guys on this forum from which I read and took a lot of information from!

Very nice job mate !
Is she still pulling ok?
Don't suppose you made a note of the pump number?
With a bit of luck I'll be finishing my pump install at the weekend.

Thanks Guys,

I haven't drove it yet - just got the exhaust system fitted and taking it out tonight to my friends place where he's going to check the pump timing etc. He's done this before so is a bit of an expert - hopefully should have a flier later tonight!

I didn't make a note of the pump number - I took it off a scrap engine (with the bananas) and bolted it on to this one. It still has all the anti tamper paint on it and doesn't look like it's ever been altered.

Good luck with your pump install alanwh.

Took it for a spin last night to see how she goes - pulls great - can't beleive the difference to the 'banana' engine I had in before! The manual pump was spot on from the start and haven't had to alter the timing!

I worked out last night how much it had cost me - £450 all in which includes engine, gearbox (not installed but kept for spare), new belts (inc timing belt), manual pump, new middle section and rear section exhaust system and gaskets, new clutch kit, new clutch cable, filters and oil. I got some money back off the electronic pump and ECU by flogging it on ebay. It took about 20 hours in total and has been well worth every minute!

I'm a very happy transit td owner now!

Hi John,

Glad everything's going ok
Suprised you got it to running ok at standard timing, I had to advance about 5 degrees to stop it smoking like fook.
How much did you get for the ECU, I've got one for sale now.. what a coincidence..hahaha!

Thanks Alan,

Not a bit of smoke from the word go - surprised me too!

I got £130 for the pump, ecu and wiring loom on eBay.

All the best
John.

looks like you made a good job of the td transplant.
wondered if you can help i have a transit di (banana)recovery truck and also a hi cube td.
is it a straight forward change over or is there a lot of wireing etc to be done?
the td has what looks like a few valves etc the other does not.
any help would be very much appreciated.
thank you very much :D :D :D

engie is a straight swap, only 5 wires

2 starter
oil pressure
temp
stop solenoid

What reg is your 'nana' engined truck

Check the serial number on the pump, ideally you want one ending in 145 or 146

Fit that to the TD along with the injector pipes (loose the PATS module off the back or fit yours), scrap all the wiring and ECU, then drop the engine in,

all the valves are vacuum controlled and are sprung open iirc
