swb day van project , WELL CRUNCH TIME, LAST CHANCE FOR BITS

Postby spudmab » Thu Mar 27, 2008 10:57 am

been looking at the forum for about 2 weeks and i thought i wouold say high

i have fun and games over the last few weeks, all starting with my escort van,

i was driving to town when the engine locked up @65mph, managed to get a tow home. i was thinking that the timing belt had gone so i started there. no luck. all the belt and pulley's were mint. so i took the belts off and had a look if i could turn it over by hand, would turn over 3/4 of a turn and the stop, i then turned it backwards and the same thing 3/4 of the way round then i locked up again.

after all his i started by taking the rocker cover off, followed by the cam shaft, no sign of any damaged in there, don't seem to have bent a valve? i then got thinking what could have happened, maybe bottom end, clutch gearbox? no one could help, spoke to loads of mechanics and none of them had a clue. so out came the gear-box followed by the clutch( witch was damage), tried the engine again same thing 3/4 and no more, next the fly wheel, then the sump, still nothing. getting well pissed by now, i took the head off.

this i where the problem was, the injector housing that should have been pressed in the head and half head by the block had some how fell out and the piston cam up and smashed the hell out of everything, knackered piston, barrel, head, valves.

i am happy i found the problem, but now no van, no car and about 15 miles form town and the other halfs work, only a crap bus service, she has to get the 7.13 am bus to get to work, or she would be late, she doesn't start till 8.30 am, the last bus back is 7.45pm, the joy of living out in the stick's.

anyway i have now got another van, after a lot of looking i have found a m reg swb std height transit, was up for £750, but it had a m.o.t in january, it also have a broken window screen, i managed to pick it up for £550. in the end,

time to sort out the inside,

i need it to work in 3 different was, i need room to move a motorbike if i needed, i also want to make it a camper van with 2-3 beds, and also use it as an every day van, should be fun.

started to mess about with the van, have now fitted two 12" subs, two amps, head unit, door speakers and wired it all up, sound very load. i have also started to make a half height bulk head so the dogs wont try and help me with the driving, lol,,

i am quite lucky with the van it has twin battery as standard, so i wired the audio to the left had one ( the right hand one is the main van battery, i.e. the starter motor ands main power for the van,)

Welcome to the forum and nice looking van, its worth reading a few of the progress reports on here, as some want to use their vans in a similar way to you. Have a flick right back as there are some great convertions and where it all started for me. Blue Van Man and Dol's vans springs to mind for me, not what you would want but ideas all the same..
Please keep the photos coming in your progress report.

Thanks for your kind words, a lot of the ideas have come from this forum, which you make your own in some way, I got the van 5 or so years back and it sat on drive for a few years... I started the interior a couple of years back, kind of finished last summer and the outside, I'm getting there

hello had a bit of a result last night,

was talking to my dad and he has an old camping fridge, it runs on 12V 240V or on gas,

it is 52.5mm wide by 45mm high by 42mm deep, what a result,

also talking to my uncal that is rebuilding a VW camper van and he has a sink and cooker,

The sink is 470mm long x 360mm & 120mm deep, there is a plug hole fitting but no plug?
Image

The cooker is 450mm wide x 350mm & 180 high. 2 burners and a grill. Both are stainless steel so would clean up ok,

should be nice when i clean it all up and get it fitted.

I'd highly recommend having them polished... or even do it yourself...
I used to do it for restoring my Cortina MK2, I kid you not, it will look like chrome 8)

hello everyone,

just an up-date,

i went to get some new wood for the back of my van and ended up at B+Q, found that they are the only store that will still cut wood down if you ask.

found some 12mm mdf for £13.98 each that are 8'*4' and asked for them to be cut down, 4 bits, 4 cuts, 1 cut per sheet, the man that cut the wood then listed down the wood on a sheet and i went looking for other bits, i also got a 4 pack of 32*32mm*2.1meters wood and 100 1 1/4 screws,

i took this to the counter and gave the woman the 4 pack, the screws and the ticket for the wood, the put it all in the till and turned around and that will be £23.12, witch i paid very quickly and left,

i loaded the wood in the back of the van and shut the doors,

what a result i have just saved £41.94 :D :D :D :D

so of i went to the next shop for some more bargain's, i ended up popping in to pound land, and i had a result in there, they have loads of camping and fishing stuff and i brought some bit a total of £6.00

Image

any way this reply is getting to long, started on the back of the van and just finished about 30 min ago so no up to date pics as it got to dark but some from earlier,
