Broken Gearbox MT75

Postby expertcourier » Sat Jun 07, 2008 5:12 pm

Finally got the mobile mechanic out this morning to do my Clutch and crankshaft oil seal,, Iv'e been itchin to have it done, anyway not used this guy before but comes highly recommended , and seems like a sound fella, so I left him to it and went shoppin grrrr.
So bein dragged around the asda daydreamin bout me van and what she is gonna drive like,, mobile rings its the mechanic "your gearbox has had it"

So I said if I get one to you in the hour can you finish today, so he says as long and im away by 5 so gets to the local breakers gets a box slings it in the boot of the wifes Rover needless to say she aint best pleased (it was a dirty bleeder)
Tear asses home he comes out has a look says its the wrong box,
Mines manual speedo and ive picked up an electronic speedo Duhhhh(didnt even oocur to me) so he says no chance of finishing today then I will have to come back on Monday but this was supposed to be a one day job Im booked solid monday.

So sorry for going on but sometimes I hate my flippin van I hate it more that shes broke though
So some pics

As you can see well broken he reckons this has been causing my clutch judder which in turn has been caused by knackered prop bearings put strain and vibration on the gearbox is that feasable?

Clutch doesnt seem to bad anyway after all that. Is a lot of oil everwhere though not on the clutch I suppose this confirms the Crankshaft oil seal was gone anyway.
Should the clutch plate look rusty like that?

Suppose ive had what you would call a bad transit day still suppose it needed doing anyway,, Let u all no how it goes

usually what causes the bellhousings to crack is fitting the mt75 to the earlier Di's which had Type 9 boxes as the MT75 needs supports which come off the engine mounts :D
not that thats really relevant as yours is a smiley so it should have them as standard :D

A lot of bellhousings crack because the engine vibration works the bolts lose then clutch operation causes the bellhousing to flex constantly which weakens the aluminium we check bellhousing bolts as a standard service item after having had quite a few cracked ones in the past especially on mark 3's.
Old transits need never die just keep mending em!

Re: Broken Gearbox MT75 still having problems.

Postby expertcourier » Tue Jun 10, 2008 8:47 pm

Hi got my van sorted and it seems great,, clutch is fine gearchanges are great and all the judder has gone. Ive been proper chuffed driving it today
Anyway been workin today clocked 200 miles been fine all day just pottering about,,but I got on the motorway to come home ,, and between 60/70 mph gear stick is vibrating like mad and if u come off the gas it vibrates so much you can hear it but then once it drops below 60 it goes away again get steady at 70 and it dies away(problem seems to be between 60 and 70 mph) but after about 30 miles I could smell oil real bad and the gear stick rubber and the bottom of the stick was getting red hot,, Have I ended up with a duff gearbox?
What oil should it have in it ? and how Much
Thanks
