Got the shed painted...

Postby pumpkinhead456 » Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:01 pm

Better start from the start I suppose...
Bought the van from Ebay last weekend, picked it up 50 miles away and drove it home with the trade plates on. No MOT or tax, but we can soon sort that... can't we? :?
Saw it today in the light for the first time, first problem was a very dead battery - no worries, got it jumped. Parked up in an actual shed, got the fibreglass out and went over the arches the best I could. Air powered sander moved things along swiftly :D That was the first time I have ever whiffed fibreglass and really enjoyed working with it! On the down side the wings are completely rotten and will need fixed properly soon enough.
Few other rusty bits on the bottom of the door and sills, so out pops the Hammerite and I slapped it on good and thick!! Turned out a wire to the alt' was broken so the battery was never getting to charge, that was a very quick fix and it starts great first time now.
An area of pretty large concern is the equally large hole in the passengers footwell. Aparently the guy that's doing the MOT knows exactly how to weld rust to rust so fingers crossed it's not completely rotten.
Anyhoo, the van is heading for it's MOT on Monday, so I might be kind and let you all know how it gets on

These are the photies from ebay. Looks like an ex BT van, it's not! It's an ex BT luton but the cab used to be blue and looks hand painted!!

That back end is off a later van, we didn't have them till the mk6 cabs, the earlier ones were flat sided boxes no streamlining.

The prancing piper logo was a rebranding in 1995 and there were versions of that logo within BT where he was bent over with his head up his arse, and another where he was blowing the trumpet from his arse. Now those would look good on your van! Sadly now it's only the globe of Openwoe as it's known within the ranks, and there's not much comedy in that logo. Bring back Busby

It looks good from afar but is far from good! I guess we will find out tomorrow if it's a real lemon or not.
Speaking of that lovely BT goddess etched in the dirt, anyone know the best way to get rid of the outline? I thought about letting someone go wildstyle with graffiti but maybe that's a bit extreme
Also as mentioned above it is a fair lift to get gear in the back, I will have to fabricate a step of some kind. Looks like it's had the pneumatic lift at some stage. I was planning to deck out the rear floor with 3mm ply, any suggestions good or bad?
I am in the fortunate position of having access to great tools and an agricultural workshop where I can get some space and warmth. I am in the unfortunate position of not having a clue what I am doing tho!!!
Thanks for your kind welcome :D

Sadly the later - sniff sniff.
2 dodgy tyres (must have been close!), wheel bearing, brake line and 3 holes needing welded. Couple o other wee bits and pieces - all in £400 max.
Now had I had any knowledge with a welder I may have attempted things myself, however as I don't I shant!! :)
So could have been better, could have been worse. At the end of the day that's £750 for the van and a years MOT along with the private plate (which I have been offered £300 for!), so can't grumble.
Will let you know how the fixing goes and maybe even post a wee pic or 2 8)
