welshrussel's Mk1 Campervan 'Big Liz'

Postby Dan T » Mon Feb 09, 2009 7:13 pm

Here's a Picture of 'Big Liz' before she undergoes her long awaited transformation 8)
I hope to keep everyone updated (especially Russ) with her progress from when she arrived on saturday untill she leaves all painted and hole free.
It may end up good enough for a space on the 'Featured Transits' page

We had a tough time starting her this morning, but after a while she was up and running and we moved her into our second workshop (The Project Workshop) to rest untill she's ready for painting.

Should run and start sweet, but it's quite rough at the moment.
It needs a good tune up and we think it may only be running on 3 cylinders, but all will be perfect when were finished :D This is the first job on the agenda anyway.

Aah No   Sorry Dan

Funny you should mention 3 cylinders, the AA guy who had to give me a jump start on Saturday mentioned this

It seemed like she ran rough then was fine being warmed up and hit speeds of 50/55mph on the M8

I'm sure there'll be something to help you in one of my boxes of bits

Glad you got it in the workshop :D

It would be great to get the engine purring as it should do  It's practically brand new, less than 5000miles on it 8)

Can't wait for the progress updates Dan - it's pretty exciting :!:

It's like Tank Overhaul and Time Team put together

I'm hoping to get as many pics as possible along the way :)

The paint scheme will be the same as present and only the cab and inner door steps will be sprayed.
The biggest job will be the removal of the wings because of the welds, Although this will allow us to look for anymore rust lurking behind panels which will be cut out and new peices welded in and sealed up.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Dan

The big jobs planned for the van are to replace the nearside lower wing, doorstep and sill, windscreen rubber and straighten up the offside wing (badly fitted by another garage). Also a couple of holes welded up in the offside doorstep and floor pan.

When this (and the other inevitable bits underneath) are welded up, the van will be resprayed in its current/original Fjord Blue 8)

Once Dan has fixed the outside, I'll get cracking on the inside with painting the cab floor and then recovering it with rubber matting.

I also plan this Spring to get my gas cooker fixed in permanetly, drinking water pipes replaced, door cards and seats recovered, buy a fridge and try to give the rear bodywork a good thorough clean :D

Also add the thousand little jobs like replacing rubber fuel pipes, wiring, chrome polishing, etc :o

Sometimes I think this van will keep me busy for the rest of my life

Well today we made a few adjustments and she now starts easier (second Crank usually does it) still running rougher than desired, but with some fine tuning it will smooth out :D
We also discovered the choke dosen't do anything when pulled out, so furthar investigation is required...

More pics soon...

Nice one Dan, great to hear she's starting easier :D

I can't beleive the choke wasn't working - no wonder she was such a bugger to start on those cold mornings

I'll be well chuffed when you manage to fix this :D
