MK6 SWB low roof.. Day van/weekend camper conversion!

Postby TheJed » Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:08 pm

So I finally got started on converting my swb low roof ex-police into my day van/weekend camper. Now, primarily this is a work van, I'm a chippie so I need to be able to get sheet materials in the back so whatever work I was going to do needed to be based around this...so...! First thing was to get the rear passenger seats out!! Piece of piss I hear you say, no! What a pig of a job, 12 bolts through the floor, had to crawl under and clip molegrips on the nuts underneath and then get back in the van and unbolt...would have been a hell of a lot easier with a mate...if I had any! :( Anyway they're out and so is the big tool storage box which I have temporarily repositioned and rebolted until the work is done, it will eventually be going as I don't like storing tools in the van anyway.
Below are a few pics of todays progress.

Seats out...finally!

The plan is to build a boxing 400mm high and 550mm wide in a sort of L shape (don't know if you can make out the layout from the pics?) which will have doors on the front allowing access to storage space underneath, I have designed it so I can still gain easy access from the rear doors and the sliding side door. The boxing on the right hand side will have a hinged piece of ply on top (also 550mm wide) that can fold out and make a bed (approx 2.1mtrs long x 1.1mtrs wide) hard to explain but it will all come clear as the work progresses. Basically we'll have seating all round the RH side and the bulkhead (fitting tomorrow), storage below, a fold out double bed and a level load area to allow easy loading of sheet materials for work! NICE!

One of the outside just for luck!

Few new pics from this afternoons progress. Made and fitted a half height bulkhead, put the tops on the seating, made the lift out lid for he corner unit (this will be where I store the bedding so that we can just up and off if the urge takes us without having to load up everything) and then I went to town with the carpet :D . Next to do will be the under seating cupboard doors and then the fold out bed, then once the toolbox is out of the way another unit over the other wheel arch. I will post some more pics as the work progresses. Any comments/ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated. Cheers Jed :D

Some more pictures of todays progress, hope you like them. :D

Here's a pic with the bed in place, this makes a 2.2 metre by 1.1 metre bed which is plenty big enough for me and the girlfriend (and I'm 6ft 5"!!!) I had to rebate the brackets for the legs into the underside of the bed base then the legs just screw on and off. The bed extension then just sits on top of the seating when not in use with the sofa/bed cushions on top. Annoyingly ran out of aly trim today but eventually the bed extension piece will also be edged to stop the carpet being lifted off.

Next jobs will be laminate flooring, wheel arch boxing, finish off the cupboard doors then deal with the upper panels and roof, really really want to stop any condensation so any tips would be grand. :D

Cheers for now, will update when I've done a bit more! :D

So managed to get a bit more done to the van over the weekend, only one pic I'm afraid cos my camera ran out of battery, also managed to get the roof lined with that foil bubble wrap type insulation which means that it will be condensation proof and useable while I try to decide what to do with the roof, thought about tongue and groove but don't want it to feel like a boat, anyone ever done it? Any other ideas? Cheers guys.

Very smart & tidy finish, not sure about the T & G myself, maybe a light vinyl to spread some light about, less claustrophobic :D

Cheers for the comments guys, I think I agree Alan, T&G may well feel a bit claustrophobic....think I will just 6mm ply it and paint it white, might even put a mirror or two up there  only to reflect the light obviously!
I'll get a few more pics up as soon as I get round to it, going away for my first weekend in the van this weekend, fishing, cant wait to try it out!
