Australian Mk2 Phase 1 truck

Postby carnut1100 » Mon Sep 21, 2009 7:51 am

Well...yesterday I purchased a 1979 Mk2 truck, picking it up tomorrow...
Will be posting photos shortly, having a problem with photobucket so not uploaded yet.
She's a white flat tray with a crane like an engine crane bolted on it which is awesome!
Straight cab, surface rust but no deep rust!!!
Factory 4.1 crosflow six, the 3 speed has been replaced by a 4 speed.
Got it for $A1500 which is about 750 pounds or so. Bargain!
I can't wait to go down tomorrow and collect it!!!
Then my Peugeot 405 goes up for sale...

More details and photos soon!

Well, it's 10pm and pouring with rain, and I have just got the old girl home! Bloody hell I love it! Few things to fix on it, like fuel gauge, speedo, dash lights, and so on, but a damn good truck! I'm taking it to work tomorrow instead of my car...

Well, I'm at the library and photobucket is behaving itself for a change so here goes!

First of all a rear view of the tray, note the swinging crane on the front right hand side, an electric winch bolts up to the end of it, will be handy!

Next a side view of the cab. Lots of surface rust but nothing deep and no holes. A wash with rust converter will do the trick nicely, and a repaint later. Still deciding what colour though.

Next a couple of front views. Even the grille is almost totally straight!

That's all the photos I have right now, but I will be taking more including engine bay, interior and shots as work progresses.
drove it to work today which was fun. Got to pull the door locks apart though, they were really stiff as the previous owner lived in a small village and never locked the doors!

Had the 405 for a while, it's an Mi16 and a fantastic car, but will be going for sale soon plans for the usual are to fix what's broken, which isn't much, then to gradually do it up while using it for getting firewood and towing car trailers and shifting car parts and so forth. It will come in handy for my house renovation too. It will get a repaint and the interior spruced up, some extra dials starting with a tachometer and the crap tape player will get a Cd instead. Power steering hopefully down the track and maybe the Mk3/4/5/ IFS conversion. Of more immediate concern is either a 5 speed gearbox or a higher diff ratio! It's uncomfortable above 80Kmh and pretty much revs out by 90... It's a cool truck, and so far I have had two people say they would have pounced on it if they knew it was for sale and two people ask for first offer if I ever sell it!

What part of Aussieland are you coming to?
Truck is still running faultlessly, been driving it to work ever since I got it!
Needs some new tyres on it ASAP though...the knackered retreads are scary!
Good thing my boss also runs a tyre joint
Ran a timing light over it and set the points and idle speed and so on the other day, now I gotta find out why the brakes are binding a little.
Might be something to do with the Toyota master cylinder that is masquerading as a Transit one...
Also got to slightly modify the crane so the new electric winch fits on it and wire it up.
Then I will make some drop-sides for the tray so I can cart loose stuff in it.
Everything is going along nicely
I'm as happy as a pig in ****...

Well, I've been driving it quite a bit now, and the non working speedo and fuel gauge is starting to annoy me, they will be fixed soon methinks...along with the heater!!!
Driver's window mechanism is stuffed, and my Dad wound the window down all the way and now it is all inside the door and won't go up so I will have to pull the door card to fix it... :x

But the biggest news is that I have found a 5 speed gearbox for it. Should be getting here Friday or Monday, complete with a bellhousing to bolt rightup to the Crossflow six, rebuilt shifter, and it should be the same length as the 4 speed so no tailshaft worries.
And I have previously changed a gearbox in a Transit in under an hour (45 minutes to be exact) so it shouldn't be long before I have overdrive and some noise relief!
