'71 SWB Bus

Postby Southerner » Thu Apr 20, 2006 9:32 pm

Bought early August, spent most of 2005 looking like this:

Planning permission finally came through in Jan and last month I finished the car port so now looking like this:

All set for sorting her out. Bus is pretty sound, well sealed and oiled by the previous owner for the most of her life but a few areas went neglected.

So far this is the worst. O/S rear arch and corner need replacing as will both wings eventually, but they can be patched up for the time being.

Engine good, top speed 55mph...

...but sound.

Interior nice, I'll get some pictures of this soon. Wiring is on its way out and I'm in the process of replacing most of it, done a few bits so far.

Hopefully more to follow in the next few months.

Not many hills in Essex Luke, 55 on the flat by the old clock - admittedly there was "a few things" wrong with that one (hadn't had any glass for some time), I'll get her out on the open road next week with the new one and see what it tells me... Real bonus when the new clock went in though - fuel gauge started working! Previous owner had put a pipe in to see the tank level when all he needed was a new cluster (saves me crawling around underneath). Now I've got two ways of knowing when to fill up.

If the van has been standing for a while dust settles on the speedo actuators causing it to read high  {yes dust can get inside the clock cluster].

i see big potential in yoru bus, and tax exempt too! :D Do you need planning permission for a car port? I thought you didn't as it doesn't have sides.

Planning permission

Postby Southerner » Mon May 01, 2006 5:25 pm

Hi Fred - was news to me as well, apparently if you have anything that will be closer to a road than your house you need plannign permission, regardless of what it is. I have a garage access "road" running next to the drive and so needed to go through the whole process. I put in for a conservatory on the same application which didn't need plannign permission as it wasn't nearer the road than the house.

oh I see! That's good to know, as if we did away with our 'workshop' and put up a tall car prt instead, it would be on the side of our house, so not near the road. But it's always better to check as planning bodies differ area to area.
