turbo transit time

we decided the other day that our new truck (n reg lwb recovery truck to be) is going to need some more power if its going to tow a car behind as well as one on the back, i had a couple of old T3 turbos lying about so we had a crack at it, the manifold is a normal single pipe manifold, turned upside down ( i was suprised it fits aswell) and a t3 cast slange we cut off an rs turbo manifold welded to the top of it, here it is







the engine on the floor was just to mock it up, we need to do a few things like blank a few pipes off on the inlet and re route the breather but it runs and it runs very very well, it honestly pulls like no other DI ive ever driven, even the proper turbo ones, its unreal

i'll take my proper camera on friday and get a video of it, it sounds great too

so overall, sticking a T3 to a DI, Good idea

no, to be honest, didnt know they were different

fitting them should increase your power too (especially 100PS ones)

i'll be putting the feelers out for a set then

its so much different now, we havnt tested it on a proper road yet as its just a chassis cab but its been up and down the farm tracks and it doesnt half shift, i knew it would be better but didnt expect it to have so much torque, and if it goes bang it doesnt matter, got 2 spare engines

Looking for £45 posted. If you take em and they arnt any good or dont give you a power boost send em back and I will give you a refund (less the postage) but there is no way I am posting them tomorrow given the postage strike!

do you have a thread on your turbo transit? i'd like a look

also where does the oil return for the turbo go to on the proper turbo DI's? we took the return to a T-peice on the return on the vac pump but because the oil has to go down and back up again the flow isnt good enough and its smoking a bit, what we are going to do tomorrow is put a nice free flowing return into the sump

just a comment; I bet that from the pic I can see that the T3 turbo has got a large turbine housing. I had firstly fitted a T2 turbo which had the turbine side much like the size of yours. I didnt put 0.1 bar before the van was revved a bit high in third gear.
Then I changed to another Garret that I selected with a small turbine side (therfore exhaust gas is delivered at a higher presure to the driving turbine) and now max boost is 1.2 bar, but thats at heavy conditions, but now even on the slightest push of the gas pedal it gives boost , and much more power

oil return for the proper ones go into the sump.

I have got a progress thread "all about fler" but there isnt very much in there at all about the turbo!

i was thinking that, it was only making about 6 psi when we revved it pretty high, i know a guy who worked at garrets and is selling and repairing turbos himself now so i'm going to see what hes got next time i see him

the welding was a cast flange to the cast manifold so we just turned the mig right up and did the biggest hottest welds we could, its penetrated good so it should be ok
