Shock absorber mounts.... GRRRRR

Well after lugging about two heavy pallets in the back of my SWB the rear nearside shock absorber mount decided to give way.

This is what remained after removing the piece that had fallen out and removing a badly welded plate from the area you can see.


This is the piece that fell out. I'll be re-using half of this piece but I need to cut off one of the square plates to enable me to pass this piece through the new repair section I've made as you can see below.


Waste not, want not - our old fridge came in useful for the metal to make the repair section. It's not as thick as I'd like but I'll be doubling it up and adding some strengthening bits to it.


And this is as far as I got .... repair section made up and almost completely welded in place but I've run out of welding wire so it will have to wait a while.


Next stage is to measure and mark out the hole for the tubular shock mount and attach it to the new repair section.

The fun of owning a very rusty Transit.... now I know how Fredrik feels although I wish I could weld as well as he does!!

Er, fridge. Are you sure that's going to be thick enough for a load bearing repair?

It's thicker metal than you think but it's not as thick as I would like in the area so some more metal magic will have to take place before mounting the shock absorber bracket.

I would of thought 16 SWG (1.6mm) would of been better for that repair...

But as long as your happy with it, then thats O.K.

you would have been beter off finding an old industrial electrical cabinet they're made of a decent thickness metal
(i use them as the metal is thicker than the stuff my local panel shop sell as chassis repair plating )

if you haven't thought of it already, if you're doubling it up, i'd drill 5mm holes about an inch apart right across the second panel so you can spot weld the two together not just at the edges, for extra stength

I will bear that in mind, if I pass somthing like that on a skip or dumped, do you mean the sort of thing that holds circiut breakers and stuff like that?

You are gonna tell me now (cos I am asking) it was a 13ft ally body.....

dunno just the back section is all i have ally pillars and ally shutters with a ally decked tail lift

And we just had £200 of repairs on on of the shutters, £150 of that was the big f*ck off spring inside the roller.

I know what you mean about the scrap, our garage has a load of old engines to get rid of, I think at least 3 of em are ours .....
