BOA Conversion

Postby Dawsie » Sun Jul 10, 2011 11:06 am

There are many threads on the above.

I am now he owner of a BOA and the attached granny that came with it.

I am hoping to get ambulance engine mounts , flywheel , adapter plate and a new clutch this week off a guy .

Unfortunately this is where everything gets a bit fuzzy -

I need to see the lump in a van and have a chat about everything else - do i need a swirl pot (?) will my accelerator cable still fit? , custom exhaust headers ?, new starter motor? , two batterys required? can I get this lump to do more than 20mpg ? , Is my diff gonna handle said power?

Oh my head hurts -

I require my van everyday and need to really have a user guide to help me install . There are many unfinished guides on this forum and (I'm sorry to say) none of them get right to the bottom of the problems that I will face .
Some of the threads are just pages of smiley faces and chitt chat . :D

James

You will need a swirl pot as it's injection

you can make your throttle cable fit

the exhaust manifold will need packing out to get past the gearbox adaptor

not sure about starter but you will have both anyway

don't need 2 batteries but they will give you more cranking power when cold

with a light right foot you should get more than 20 mpg

diff should be ok

start a progress thread on here and i'll answer any questions as you come across them - you could read my progress thead as thats finished - same as oxtonyxo's both vans ran completed on the road :D

but yes more than 20mpg is atainable

diff should be ok if its in good nick

and you'll not need twin batteries :D

Thanks for your replies on this. I suppose this is a progress thread.

I've just picked up an adapter plate , ( are the gaskets the same)
two full engine mounts (one rubber is knackered but I imagine the xisting rubber from my banana will fit),
a flywheel and a good clutch all from an Ambulance - all for a very very reasonable 50 sheets.

Should I buy the gearbox from the same vehicle - it was mentioned that my van probably wont have a better top end without either a new diff or a box.

I need to have all the conversion parts stockpiled - has any one got a ambulance rad? Where do I get a swirl pot from ? Do I Have to use a K&N or will the existing air filter fit? Has anyone got an ambulance slippa (sp?) diff ? Can I use the existing tranny fusebox ? - have I forgotten anything ?

progress thread then we need pics

the gearbox is nothing special - the one from the donor migh have better ratios but a Di one is the same and is likely to have had a better life do i'd go with that :) the box wont alter the top end i think 5th's are all the same its only 1st mabe 2nd thats different (i think) :?

you'll need the starter too :!: as it's 1 tooth different to the granada one :D

engiene mounts - the rubbers off a mk3/4 will fit but not the mk5

what do you mean by gaskets :?: the adapter plate dosnt have any :D

Thanks Luke - all good advice !!!!

I could grab the starter off him but might get new to save me in the long run. .

I'm afraid there won't be any pics as I won't be the man installing it - Its above me and as its my daily driver I will borrow a motor for the week it takes to
a) tune and service the granada engine
b) remove the engine and loom from the granada
c) install the engine and loom and the conversion parts into the tipper and test it

you can still get us some pics when you see it :D

if i were you i'd get the starter while you can - it might be unique to the v6 transit and need the pinion to be rebuilt into a granada one

I'm on a mission today to find a v6 starter , rad and pipes and exhaust headers.

The 'grey' area is the loom . Can't I buy a loom and fusebox to slot into the van to run the BOA.
I always knew that the wiring would be the problem , but I have read that it has taken days if not weeks to achieve.

Is there a company out there who makes looms and could make one up in one go . The BOA is the choice for TVR , kit car and many other genre of motorist so I imagine I'm not the first to think this .

The loom is easy, you need to remove the section which runs from the ECU to the EDIS module keeping as much of it as possible, it can be trimmed down later

If you fit a mk4/5 efi tank (all mk5s are EFI) then you dont need a swirl pot. Any MK5 petrol rad will also work (Mk4 ones have the hose connection in the same place as diesel).

The DOHC have fans on the rad, but in my 2.9 EFi install there wasn't room for them so I am using a slimline 14" fan off ebay
