My Mk 6 project

Postby LukeM » Tue Jul 19, 2011 1:11 pm

Day 1

Just picked up this mk6 swb Transit yesterday, got 34,000 on the clock and runs nicely.

First list of jobs to do:
- Sort out a few rust spots on the body work
- Use a heat gun to bring back the colour to the faded bumpers and trim
- Machine polish paintwork
- Fit bonded windows in the rear barn doors
- Insulate & Carpet the back

Under the bonnet the little riveted tag says V.K Orange anybody heard of this colour before? Just come back from my local car paints supplier and they couldnt match it?

Its going to be mainly used for camping and mountain biking trips.

Cheers for the replies, I'll be starting the bumpers tomorrow, and hopefully sorting out the little rust spots on the paint work this weekend coming. Pictures will be added on the way.

Does the heat gun trick work on painted bumpers? I thought it was only for bare faded plastics.....

Day 2

A little update.....

Attempted using a heat gun this morning on the faded bumpers, they didn't turn out as well as i'd hoped. So i've opted for using some Halfords Bumper Paint.
Tried it out on one of the rear corners for a test before i remove the bumpers and do the whole lot.
This is after one coat.

Think its come out really well and will make a lot of difference to the overall look of the van once its completed.

Also i didn't realise how faded the roof on this van actually was!!

Image

Its near enough completely faded!!
I'll give it a machine polish soon, but if that fails i might look to going down the road of vinyl wrapping in either Black or Metallic Gunmetal Grey

Looks great - what type of electric polisher have you got? I'm looking at getting one myself and don't want to end up buying a duff!

Also, what's with the heat gun method on the bumpers? How's that done?

Cheers,
